Climate change impact on extreme precipitation and peak flood magnitude and frequency: observations from CMIP6 and hydrological models

Hadush Meresa et al.

Summary: Changes in climate intensity and frequency have a significant impact on water resource and flood risk management. Uncertainty in the influence of climate change on flood hazards comes from various factors such as climate model discrepancies, climate bias correction methods, flood frequency distribution, and hydrological model parameters. This study examines projected changes in flood quantiles and extreme high flow events in selected catchments, indicating a substantial increase in annual extreme precipitation and flood quantiles in the future.

Relationship between meteorological and hydrological droughts in the upstream regions of the Lancang-Mekong River

Jiqiu Li et al.

Summary: This study characterized and studied MD and HD in the ULMR using standardized precipitation index and standardized streamflow index, finding that the duration and magnitude of MD and HD increase with time scale, and MD is more likely to propagate to HD. Additionally, there is a positive correlation between MD and HD, with HD lagging behind MD.

Establishing a statistical relation between meteorological and hydrological drought indices

M. A. Jincy Rose et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydrological drought behaviour of a river basin based on the meteorological drought condition of the watershed. Four popular drought indices are used to establish a statistical relation and predict future droughts. The study also examines the spatial variation of hydrological drought over the basin and the propagation of hydrological drought during meteorological drought events. The findings show a slight decrease in the spatial extent of hydrological drought over time and a strong correlation between meteorological and hydrological drought indices at specific grid locations. The study highlights the importance of understanding and predicting hydrological droughts for effective water resource management.

Added value of CMIP6 models over CMIP5 models in simulating the climatological precipitation extremes in China

Neng Luo et al.

Summary: The CMIP6 models show improvements in simulating climatological precipitation extremes over China, reducing dry biases in South China and producing more heavy precipitation events. Additionally, wet biases over West China are also reduced, related to reduced precipitation frequency and weakened precipitation intensity. Overall, the CMIP6 models have improved in simulating total precipitation on wet days, but biases still exist in simulating consecutive dry days.

Investigating seasonal drought severity-area-frequency (SAF) curve over Indian region: incorporating GCM and scenario uncertainties

Subhadarsini Das et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the Severity-Area-Frequency (SAF) curve variability using Standardised Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) as a drought indicator in Maharashtra, India. The results suggest an increase in precipitation during pre-monsoon, monsoon, and Kharif seasons, while temperatures are expected to rise across all seasons. The frequency of extreme drought conditions is projected to increase in post-monsoon, pre-monsoon, and Rabi seasons compared to historical periods.

A comprehensive assessment of remote sensing and traditional based drought monitoring indices at global and regional scale

Niranga Alahacoon et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive review of drought indices used in different fields. It identifies 111 drought indices, divided into traditional and remote sensing categories. The results show that meteorological drought monitoring uses the highest number of traditional indices, while agricultural drought monitoring uses the fewest. Additionally, the study highlights the increasing use of remote sensing indices with advancements in satellite technology.

Impacts of Global Climate Warming on Meteorological and Hydrological Droughts and Their Propagations

Guiyang Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates changes in meteorological and hydrological drought conditions in 8,655 watersheds globally under 1.5-3.0 degrees C warmer climates. The results show that, except for certain regions, both meteorological and hydrological drought conditions would be relieved in warmer climates due to increased precipitation. However, the severity of drought conditions would increase during the propagation from meteorological to hydrological droughts, with more severe conditions occurring first and then being relieved with rising temperatures. Efforts to slow down global warming are crucial to suppress the deterioration of drought conditions during propagation.

Summary: This study simulated the dynamics and patterns of hydrological drought in near-real river networks and revealed the spread of drought along main channels. By analyzing the relationship between climate indices and hydrological drought, it was found that climate variation patterns have significant impact on the drought dynamic patterns.

Propagation of meteorological to hydrological drought for different climate regions in China

Yibo Ding et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a weaker propagation relationship in arid environments compared to moist environments, with a stronger relationship between the two types of drought observed in summer and autumn than in spring and winter. Climate is not the only factor impacting drought propagation, as land cover and topographic features, as well as human activity, may also influence the propagation time and intensity from meteorological to hydrological drought.

Multi-timescale assessment of propagation thresholds from meteorological to hydrological drought

Jiefeng Wu et al.

Summary: Hydrological drought usually lags behind meteorological drought, and obtaining the propagation threshold (PT) is important for providing early warnings of hydrological drought. Different timescales and methods can lead to varying estimates of PT, with longer timescales corresponding to larger PT. The response sensitivities of drought indices at different timescales contribute to the differences in PT estimates.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of 35 GCMs of CMIP6 in replicating rainfall in Mainland South-East Asia. Most models were able to capture the rainfall climatology of the region, but their performance varied in terms of different metrics. The study identified MRI-ESM2-0, EC-Earth3 and EC-Earth3-Veg as the most suitable subset of GCMs for rainfall projections in MSEA.
