Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals have experienced outbreaks of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO), mainly caused by CRAB and C. auris. Inadequate adherence to personal protective equipment/hand hygiene, PPE shortage, and high antibiotic use were the most commonly reported potentially modifiable factors contributing to these outbreaks.

Antimicrobial Stewardship in the Covid-19 Pandemic

Outbreak of NDM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in the intensive care unit during the COVID-19 pandemic: Another nightmare

Summary: An outbreak of Klebsiella pneumoniae producing the carbapenemase NDM-1 occurred in the ICU during the last COVID-19 wave, with 12 patients testing positive. While 7 were asymptomatic, 5 developed infections. The clonal origin of the strains was confirmed through resistome and in silico multilocus sequence typing, with a possible environmental reservoir identified as a contributing factor alongside difficulties in observing optimal bio-cleaning procedures due to workload and exhaustion.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to necessary modifications in infection control policies and practices in acute healthcare facilities globally, resulting in both outbreaks and decreases in MDRO rates. It is crucial to consider the potential collateral effects of changes in IPC and ASP practices while implementing preventive measures for COVID-19. Disruption caused to IPC and ASP practices during the pandemic may paradoxically lead to an increase in MDRO transmission.

Knowledge of infection prevention and control among healthcare workers and factors influencing compliance: a systematic review

Summary: Overall, healthcare workers' knowledge of IPC appears to be adequate, good, and/or high, especially concerning standard precautions, hand hygiene, and care pertaining to urinary catheters. Acceptable levels of knowledge were also detected in regards to IPC measures for specific diseases including TB, MRSA, MERS-CoV, COVID-19, and Ebola. Gaps were identified in several healthcare workers' knowledge concerning occupational vaccinations, the modes of transmission of infectious diseases, and the risk of infection from needle stick and sharps injuries. Recommendations for improving adherence to IPC guidelines are discussed in the review.

Worries and concerns among healthcare workers during the coronavirus 2019 pandemic: A web-based cross-sectional survey

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the worries and concerns of healthcare workers (HCWs) regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that both frontline and non-frontline HCWs expressed comparable concerns about the pandemic, but frontline HCWs were more inclined to avoid contact with families and friends and felt unable to evade their professional duty during the pandemic. Effective mental health protection strategies are needed for HCWs.
