Advance care planning and end-of-life care in patients with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator: The perspective of relatives

Summary: There is limited discussion of implantable cardioverter defibrillator deactivation among patients in their last phase of life. Lack of understanding of device functioning and perceived lack of time from healthcare professionals are common barriers to advance care planning. Device shocks were distressing for both patients and relatives, and relatives of patients with a deactivated device reported a higher quality of death compared to those with an active device.
