Review of soil heavy metal pollution in China: Spatial distribution, primary sources, and remediation alternatives

Yufeng Wu et al.

Summary: With the development of economy, soil heavy metal pollution has become more severe, leading to degradation of soil resources and deterioration of ecosystems. This study focuses on the analysis of heavy metal pollution in Guangxi, Fujian, Liaoning, and Yunnan provinces in China. The results show that heavy metal concentrations increase from north to south, with the highest pollution in Northeast China and excessive levels in Central, Southwest, and South China. Mineral exploitation and industrial production are the primary causes in severely polluted provinces, while sewage irrigation and irrational fertilizer use contribute to pollution in agricultural areas. Urban development, transportation, and household refuse are also potential driving factors. Remediation methods involving physical-chemical, chemical-biological, and physical-biological technologies are widely applied, with a focus on combining phytoremediation and microbial remediation techniques for their environmental friendliness. Overall, this study provides valuable information on spatial distribution, sources, and remediation alternatives for soil heavy metal pollution, contributing to the protection of soil resources and land utilization.

Contributions of partition and adsorption to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons sorption by fractionated soil at different particle sizes

Lei Tang et al.

Summary: The composition and structure of soil particles play a crucial role in the partition and adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Interactions between micropores, soil organic matter, and minerals enhance the sorption of PAHs. Additionally, soil organic matter inhibits the release of adsorbed PAHs during heating.

Soil particle size fraction and potentially toxic elements bioaccessibility: A review

Yan Li et al.

Summary: Studies have shown significant differences in the bioaccessibility of PTE in soil across different size fractions, with a general trend of higher bioaccessibility in finer size fractions. The relationship between bioaccessibility and soil size fraction varies for different elements, suggesting the need for consensus on methods to determine PTE bioaccessibility for more accurate human health risk assessment.

Health Risk Assessment of Metals via Multi-Source Oral Exposure for Children Living in Areas with Intense Electronic Manufacturing Activities

Beibei Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the health risks of metal(loid)s exposure through oral pathways for children in an area of China dominated by the electronic manufacturing industry. It found that food intake was the primary exposure pathway and identified Pb and Cr as major risk elements, with kindergarten children experiencing higher risks compared to primary school students. Prioritizing research on different types of food sources and their bioavailability is crucial for protecting children's health.

Personal exposure assessment of pesticides in residents: The association between hand wipes and urinary biomarkers

A. Oerlemans et al.

Summary: Residential exposure to pesticides can happen through inhalation, direct skin contact, and consumption of food with pesticide residues. This study in the Netherlands looked at dermal exposure to pesticides in farmer and non-farmer families living near agricultural fields. The results showed higher concentrations of some pesticides in hand wipes during use periods, especially in farmer families, with carbendazim showing a strong correlation between hand wipes and urine metabolites.
