Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs) in soil around municipal solid waste incinerator: A comparison with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs)

Aimin Song et al.

Summary: The study analyzed PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs in soil samples collected around a large-scale MSWI. Both PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs showed comparable concentrations and toxic equivalent quantities in these samples. Spatially, the concentrations of both PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs decreased outward from the MSWI and exhibited significant linear correlations with the distances from the MSWI in certain soil samples. PBDD/Fs were mainly sourced from the MSWI and diesel exhaust, while PCDD/Fs were influenced by the MSWI, automobile exhaust, and pentachlorophenol (PCP)/Na-PCP. The non-carcinogenic risks of dioxins in most soil samples were acceptable, but some samples located close to the MSWI and highways showed unacceptable carcinogenic risks.

Surfactant-enhanced remediation of oil-contaminated soil and groundwater: A review

Jian-Wu Liu et al.

Summary: Oil leakage during extraction, processing, transportation, and storage can seriously damage the soil and groundwater environment. Surfactants play a crucial role in enhancing the remediation of oil-contaminated sites by reducing surface tension, improving contact efficiency of contaminants, and suppressing tailing and rebound effects. Different types of surfactants offer diverse options for remediation, with biosurfactants and mixed surfactants being particularly effective and worth attention. Adsorption of surfactants on soils and aquifer sediments should be minimized to avoid decreased remediation efficiency and potential secondary pollution.

Persistent organic pollutant cycling in forests

Ping Gong et al.

Summary: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are internationally regulated due to their toxicity and environmental impact. Forests act as a filter for POPs, absorbing and storing them from the atmosphere, but factors like soil organic carbon content and climate can influence their distribution and storage. Deforestation and forest fires threaten the ability of forests to sequester POPs, impacting their global cycling. Regular large-scale observations in forests are needed to better understand the burden of POPs in the environment.
