Comparative cytology combined with transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses of Solanum nigrum L. in response to Cd toxicity

Juncai Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that cadmium stress reduced plant biomass, damaged cell ultrastructure, and increased cadmium transport capability. Metabolomics analyses and RNA-seq revealed changes in metabolism pathways and gene expression under cadmium stress, highlighting the critical role of cell wall biosynthesis in cadmium detoxification. This comprehensive investigation provides a molecular-scale perspective on plant response to cadmium stress.

Summary: There is a global need to use plants to restore the ecological environment, but there is currently a lack of systematic review on phytoremediation mechanisms and parameters for environmental pollution. Plants mainly rely on their own metabolism and interactions with microorganisms to repair the ecological environment.

Transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome reveal the mechanism of tolerance to selenate toxicity in Cardamine violifolia

Shen Rao et al.

Summary: Analysis of Cardamine violifolia treated with selenate revealed upregulation of sulfate transporter genes and sulfur assimilatory enzyme genes, as well as downregulation of calcium proteins and cysteine-rich kinases, and upregulation of SBP1 and SDI2. This study offers novel insights into the mechanisms of Se accumulation and tolerance in plants.

Sulfur triggers glutathione and phytochelatin accumulation causing excess Cd bound to the cell wall of roots in alleviating Cd-toxicity in alfalfa

Urmi Das et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that supplementation of sulfur can alleviate cadmium toxicity in alfalfa plants by restoring biomass, chlorophyll synthesis, and protein concentration, as well as enhancing photosynthetic kinetics and membrane stability. The mechanisms involve upregulation of sulfate transporters, glutathione and phytochelatin synthesis, and subcellular sequestration of excess cadmium in roots under sulfur surplus conditions. These findings provide valuable insights for developing cadmium-free forage crops through sulfur application and breeding/transgenic experiments.

Contrasting detoxification mechanisms of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under Cd and Pb stress

Chonghua Li et al.

Summary: Research shows that C. reinhardtii is more tolerant to Pb than Cd, with significant increases in extracellular and intracellular substances such as EPS under Cd and Pb treatments. Various EPS functional groups are involved in interactions with Cd and Pb. The removal rates of Cd and Pb by C. reinhardtii exceed 50%, with adsorption dominating in low-Cd treatments and absorption dominating at low Pb concentrations.

The effect of potassium fertilization on the metabolite profile of tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Christoph H. Weinert et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of potassium fertilization on the metabolite profile of tomato fruits through an outdoor pot experiment, finding that increased potassium supply mainly led to higher levels of tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates, changes in the mobile nitrogen pool and minor sugars, as well as elevated levels of some secondary metabolites in the fruits. The response to potassium fertilization varied among different tomato cultivars, with cultivar-specific effects observed. Future studies need to consider the differences between cultivars more carefully.

Effects of selenate on Se, flavonoid, and glucosinolate in broccoli florets by combined transcriptome and metabolome analyses

Shen Rao et al.

Summary: This study found that selenate treatment significantly influences the selenium, glucosinolate, and flavonoid contents in broccoli florets. The results suggest that selenium may regulate the accumulation of glucosinolates and flavonoids by modulating the expression of specific genes, providing novel insights into the effects of selenium on these compounds.

Metabolic Profiles of Brassica juncea Roots in Response to Cadmium Stress

Piaopiao Tan et al.

Summary: The roots of Brassica juncea showed significant alterations in metabolic pathways and metabolites in response to Cd stress, with changes in amino acids, organic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, flavonoids, alkaloids, and indoles. The plant adapted to Cd stress by regulating various metabolic pathways at different time points, which contributed to its tolerance and accumulation mechanisms of Cd.
