Spatiotemporal Variations in Trace Element Compositions in Pollock Populations under the Influence of Coastal Norwegian Salmon Farms

Linda Fourdain et al.

Summary: Pollock modify their feeding habits by including uneaten feed pellets from salmon aquaculture in their diet. The influence of salmon farms on Pollock was determined by analyzing trace element signatures from muscle and liver tissues. The study found that trace element assessment can be a potential tool for evaluating the impact of aquaculture on Pollock populations.

Organic contaminants in imported salmon feed and their effects on reef ecosystems in New Zealand

Rebecca M. McMullin et al.

Summary: Organic matter from salmon farms can be assimilated by wild communities. The effect of assimilation on contaminant profiles differs among species. The imported feed to New Zealand has low levels of most organic contaminants and is unlikely to have significant ecological effects on adjacent habitats.

Mesoscale cycling of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea biotic and abiotic environment: A WRF-CMAQ modeling

Linfei Wang et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization and industrialization in the eastern seaboard region of China have led to widespread use of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs). This study assessed the environmental fate and contamination of OPFRs in the Bohai and Yellow Seas using a modeling framework, which predicted meteorological conditions, emissions, and concentrations of OPFRs in different compartments. The model revealed the effects of source proximity, atmospheric transport, and changes in meteorology on the distribution of OPFRs, specifically Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), in coastal waters. The study provides useful information for environmental and health consequences, emission mitigation, and fishery industry development.

Ecological risk assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in surface sediments from aquaculture system

Nuning Vita Hidayati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of OCPs and PCBs in the surface sediments from shrimp ponds in the northern part of the Central Java coast. The highest concentration of OCPs was found in Brebes Regency, while PCBs mainly originated from Aroclor 1254 and Aroclor 1248. Some OCPs were found to exceed sediment quality guidelines, highlighting the potential adverse effects on the environment.

A quantitative analysis of organic matter inputs to soft sediment communities surrounding salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds region of New Zealand

Rebecca M. McMullin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of salmon farms on soft sediment communities, revealing the biochemical and biomass characteristics of organic matter subsidies and farm activities for soft sediment organisms. The results showed that basal organic matter assimilation and trophic levels of soft sediment communities varied with distance from the farms.

Ecological risk of chlorinated organic pollutants in a semi-enclosed bay impacted by aquaculture

Xiaoxuan Yu et al.

Summary: The study on chlorinated organic pollutants in semi-enclosed bays revealed high concentrations of DDTs and PCBs above China marine sediment standards, necessitating remediation efforts. High potential ecological risk of DDTs was observed, likely influenced by seasonal variations and resuspension of historical contaminants.
