Reducing agents enhanced Fenton-like oxidation (Fe(III)/Peroxydisulfate): Substrate specific reactivity of reactive oxygen species

Shuang Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the substrate specific reactivity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Fe(III)/PDS systems enhanced by different reducing agents (RAs). The results indicate that RAs significantly enhance the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycles to produce •OH, SO4•-, and Fe(IV). The different yields of the oxidation product suggest that the distribution of multiple oxidizing species changes with various factors. This work provides possibilities for adjusting the oxidation selectivity in RAs/Fe(III)/PDS systems and offers insights into the application of RAs in environmental remediation.

Yanhua Peng et al.

Summary: This study compares the oxidation differences of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by carbon nanotube (CNT)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS), nanodiamond (ND)/PMS, and PMS direct oxidation systems. The results showed that the reaction rate constant of the CNT/PMS system is significantly higher than the ND/PMS and PMS direct oxidation systems. Product analysis revealed differences in the oxidation mechanism and products among the different oxidation systems. Therefore, the choice of carbon catalyst plays a crucial role in the degradation and toxicity of organic pollutants in wastewater treatment.

Insight into metal-free carbon catalysis in enhanced permanganate oxidation: Changeover from electron donor to electron mediator

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that metal-free carbon materials can enhance permanganate oxidation for organic pollutant removal in water. However, the activation mechanism and active sites are still unclear due to the complex physicochemical properties of carbon. This study investigates the use of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a carbon material to boost permanganate oxidation and demonstrates two reaction pathways involved, namely electron donation by rGO and electron transfer mediation. The presence of oxygen-containing groups and structural defects in rGO are found to play crucial roles in electron transfer. Controlling the oxidation pathway in the rGO/PM system can be achieved by regulating the oxygen functional groups and structural defects.
