Determination of natural thorium isotopes (230Th and 232Th) in calcium and magnesium supplements and the potential effective exposure radiation dose for human

Aleksandra Moniakowska et al.

Summary: The study investigated the content of radiotoxic thorium radionuclides, alpha-emitting Th-230 and Th-232, in popular calcium and magnesium supplements for adults in Poland. The results showed that natural origin supplements had significantly higher concentrations of Th-230 compared to synthetic ones. Although these supplements may increase the annual effective radiation dose received by a human, the exposure is considered to be low from the radiological and toxicological perspectives.

Committed effective dose and lifetime cancer risk due to ingestion of natural radionuclides in grains grown in an area of high background radiation

Leandro B. Silva et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the committed effective dose and cancer risk from consuming grains grown in a high background radiation area. The highest activity concentrations of K-40, Ra-226, Ra-228, and Th-228 were found. The estimated effective dose was 0.5 mSv.y(-1), and the cancer risk suggested that continuous and unrestricted consumption of beans from this area is not desirable.

Beta-emitting radionuclides in wild mushrooms and potential radiotoxicity for their consumers

Dagmara Struminska-Parulska et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the significant measurable natural and artificial beta-emitting radionuclides in wild macrofungi, finding the highest levels of artificial beta emitter 90Sr in Ukraine and natural beta emitter 210Pb in Spain. Consumption of wild macrofungi from areas with high natural radiation background or pollution may pose health risks to humans through potential exposure to radiotoxic decay particles produced by beta emitters.
