Vortex Reconnection and Turbulence Cascade

Jie Yao et al.

Summary: Reconnection, as a fundamental topology-transforming event, plays a significant role in the dynamics of plasmas, polymers, DNA, and fluids, including both classical viscous and quantum systems. Recent studies have made substantial advances in understanding vortex reconnection in classical viscous flows, including the physical mechanism, its relationship to turbulence cascade, the formation of a finite-time singularity, helicity dynamics, and aeroacoustic noise generation.

Bursting on a vortex tube with initial axial core-size perturbations

Lingbo Ji et al.

Summary: In this study, we simulate and analyze the evolution of a rectilinear vortex tube with initial axial core-size perturbations at a circulation-based Reynolds number of 5000. We find that when two twist waves of opposite handedness meet, vortex bursting occurs, leading to the formation of local ringlike structures with opposite-signed azimuthal vorticity. Furthermore, the evolution of the perturbed tubes is accompanied by sustained elevated enstrophy levels and accelerated energy decay.

Two-component convection flow driven by a heat-releasing concentration field

Yuhang Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the convection flow driven by a heat-releasing concentration field through linear stability analysis and direct numerical simulations. The research reveals specific patterns in flow structures and concentration distribution under different parameters, with the global flux accurately described by the theoretical model.

Instability and disintegration of vortex rings during head-on collisions and wall interactions

Aakash Mishra et al.

Summary: Through numerical simulations and studying the evolution of energy and viscous dissipation, this study clarifies the influence of azimuthal instabilities on the collision of vortex rings, indicating that under certain conditions, vortices may disintegrate leading to the formation of a turbulent cloud.

Large eddy simulations of forced and stably stratified turbulence: Evolution, spectra, scaling, structures and shear

Rahul Agrawal et al.

Summary: Large eddy simulations of forced stratified turbulence were conducted at multiple Froude numbers, utilizing the Smagorinsky model and continuous forcing scheme. The study revealed that increasing Froude numbers delayed the attainment of a fully developed state, leading to lower dissipation rates and enstrophy.

Thermohaline interleaving induced by horizontal temperature and salinity gradients from above

Junyi Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that horizontal gradients of temperature and salinity can drive thermohaline intrusion. Different types of convection generate differential vertical fluxes from the top boundary, maintaining horizontal temperature and salinity gradients. This intrusion process provides an additional pathway for heat and salinity transfer horizontally.

Cascades and reconnection in interacting vortex filaments

Rodolfo Ostilla-Monico et al.

Summary: The reconnection of two interacting vortex tubes is a fundamental process in fluid mechanics, which exhibits a rich phenomenology when the initial straight tubes interact at an angle of beta with some symmetries relaxed. The breakdown of vortex sheets involves twisting and the formation of small-scale vortices, universal at very high Reynolds numbers.
