Mass Transfer at the Ocean-Atmosphere Interface: The Role of Wave Breaking, Droplets, and Bubbles

Luc Deike

Summary: Breaking waves have a significant impact on the climate system by influencing the transfer of energy, momentum, and mass between the ocean and atmosphere. This article explores the importance of drops and bubbles generated by breaking waves and discusses recent progress in understanding the processes involved. It also proposes a pathway towards mechanistic parameterizations that account for the effects of sea state.

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent mass transfer at the surface of an open channel flow

Michele Pinelli et al.

Summary: In this study, turbulent open channel flow coupled with passive scalar transport was investigated using direct numerical simulations. The results show the presence of very large-scale motions even at relatively modest Reynolds numbers. The scaling relationship between transfer velocity and Schmidt number is consistent with previous studies and theoretical predictions. However, the scaling relationship between transfer velocity and Reynolds number depends on the definition of Reynolds number used. The study also validates the two-regime model proposed by Theofanous et al. and reveals the significant influence of small-scale vortices on mass transfer for turbulent Reynolds numbers larger than 500. Additionally, it was found that the root mean square of surface divergence is proportional to the mean transfer velocity, but the spatial correlation between instantaneous surface divergence and transfer velocity decreases with increasing Schmidt number and increases with increasing Reynolds number.

High-resolution direct simulation of deep water breaking waves: transition to turbulence, bubbles and droplets production

W. Mostert et al.

Summary: The study utilized high-resolution three-dimensional direct numerical simulations to investigate the impact of Reynolds number and Bond number on breaking waves. It was found that under high Re and Bo conditions, the transition of breaking waves from laminar to 3-D turbulent flow depended on turbulent Re, and bubble size distribution exhibited two distinct regimes with good agreement with experimental data.

A phase-change model for diffusion-driven mass transfer problems in incompressible two-phase flows

Gabriele Gennari et al.

Summary: In this paper, a VOF-based numerical method for diffusion-driven phase-change flows is proposed to handle the incompressible Direct Navier-Stokes (DNS) equations. The method addresses the velocity discontinuities across the interface by smoothly extending the liquid velocity field in a way that allows the interface to be transported by a divergence-free velocity field. The transport of species is treated using a two-scalar approach, and special attention is given to preventing artificial mass transfer in the advection and diffusion steps. The method is validated against analytical and semi-analytical models, and is applied to investigate the growth of electrochemically generated bubbles on planar electrodes, considering the effect of contact angles and the number of nucleation sites.

Dynamics of bubbles rising in pseudo-2D bubble column: Effect of confinement and inertia

M. Gumulya et al.

Summary: 2D rectangular columns are often used for visualization and CFD studies of multiphase flows. In this study, a numerical analysis was conducted on the dynamics of a rising bubble within such a setup, indicating that the shape and motion of the bubble are influenced by the gap size and Reynolds number. Increasing Reynolds number results in a more elongated oblate spheroidal shape and predominantly rectilinear rise behavior of the bubble.

Sub-Hinze scale bubble production in turbulent bubble break-up

Alienor Riviere et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics and statistics of bubble break-up in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence through direct numerical simulations, focusing on the influence of the Weber number on bubble break-up dynamics. The findings reveal that during the transition to stable conditions, bubble break-up occurs through both local and non-local production processes, resulting in a range of bubble sizes.

Analysis of droplet evaporation in isotropic turbulence through droplet-resolved DNS

Michael S. Dodd et al.

Summary: This study conducted DNS of evaporation of n-heptane fuel droplets in forced homogeneous isotropic turbulence and carried out a parametric study. The results showed that increasing the liquid volume fraction of droplets decreases the evaporation rate and causes deviation from the classical law.

Bubble deformation by a turbulent flow

Stephane Perrard et al.

Summary: In this study, the deformation modes and lifetime of a bubble in a turbulent flow are investigated through numerical simulations and theoretical analysis. Two temporal regimes are observed during the bubble deformation process, with the first regime driven by inertial forces and the second regime resulting from a balance between inertial forces and surface tension.

Bubble-mediated transfer of dilute gas in turbulence

Palas Kumar Farsoiya et al.

Summary: Gas exchange mediated by bubbles in turbulent flow is important for various applications, including chemical reactors and ocean-atmosphere interaction. The transfer rate from a single bubble in turbulence has been characterized, showing that mass transfer occurs within a thin diffusive boundary layer at the bubble-liquid interface. A non-dimensional transfer rate has been proposed based on the turbulent Peclet number, and theoretical predictions have been verified by numerical simulations, demonstrating good agreement when the boundary layer is properly resolved.
