Impact of vegetation cover loss on surface temperature and carbon emission in a fastest-growing city, Cumilla, Bangladesh

Abdullah-Al- Faisal et al.

Summary: Human pressures, changing hydrology and land resources have a significant impact on the carbon chain and ecosystem resilience. Urbanization leads to vegetation cover reduction, accelerating carbon emissions and increasing land surface temperature. This study used remote sensing and GIS techniques to estimate Land Use/Land Cover changes in Cumilla from 1994 to 2019, finding a concerning decrease in vegetation cover, urban expansion, and continuous rise in land surface temperature.

Does the application of industrial robots overcome the Solow paradox? Evidence from China

Longzheng Du et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of industrial robot application on total factor productivity in different regions of China. The empirical results show a U-shaped relationship between industrial robot application and total factor productivity, with provinces surpassing the turning point experiencing increased productivity. Industrial robot application promotes total factor productivity by improving human capital and information technology, while aging has a negative effect. Additionally, the spatial effect test reveals a U-shaped relationship within local areas and an inverted U-shaped relationship in neighboring regions.

Predicting the impacts of land use/land cover changes on seasonal urban thermal characteristics using machine learning algorithms

Abdulla-Al Kafy et al.

Summary: Changes in land use/land cover and land surface temperatures significantly affect urban heat island effects. This study assesses and predicts the thermal characteristics of Sylhet city in Bangladesh. The results show continued expansion of urban built-up areas and reductions in green cover and water bodies, which will have an impact on the heat island effect. Effective strategies are provided to mitigate the heat island effects and ensure sustainable and eco-friendly urban development.

Effects of land use and land cover change on soil organic carbon storage in the Hexi regions, Northwest China

Yongge Li et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of land use and land cover change (LUCC) on soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in arid inland regions, finding that SOC distribution varies across different regions and LUCC plays a significant role in influencing SOC storage. SOC storage changes in the Qilian Mountains and Hexi Corridor are primarily driven by different LUCC factors, with climate change and cropland expansion being key drivers for enhancing SOC storage in the respective regions.

Assessment of temporal shifting of PM2.5, lockdown effect, and influences of seasonal meteorological factors over the fastest-growing megacity, Dhaka

Abdullah-Al-Faisal et al.

Summary: Dhaka experiences consistently high levels of pollution throughout the year, resulting in unhealthy air quality. A study analyzing data from 2019 to 2021 found that the daily average PM2.5 concentration in Dhaka was four times higher than the WHO limit and two times higher than the Bangladesh standard. The study also identified a correlation between PM2.5 levels and meteorological variables, with inverse relationships observed for rainfall, temperature, and humidity, and a positive relationship with wind speed.

Assessing the impacts of vegetation cover loss on surface temperature, urban heat island and carbon emission in Penang city, Malaysia

Zullyadini A. Rahaman et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization and human demands impact carbon emissions and contribute to global warming. This study assessed carbon emissions dynamics in Penang City, Malaysia and their impact on land surface temperature (LST) change and urban heat island (UHI) effects. The findings reveal a decrease in forest cover, an increase in urban areas, and significant increases in average LST and UHI. The decrease in carbon stock concentration is attributed to the loss of vegetative cover. Strong positive correlations between carbon emissions and LST and UHI suggest that carbon emissions are highly responsible for temperature increase and UHI effects. Effective strategies such as afforestation and urban greening are proposed to improve carbon storage capacity and reduce climate change impacts.

Modelling the impacts of land use/land cover changing pattern on urban thermal characteristics in Kuwait

Ahmad E. AlDousari et al.

Summary: This study monitored and predicted the changes in land use/land cover and their impacts on land surface temperature, urban heat island, and urban thermal field variance index in Kuwait. The results showed that the transformation of bare land and vegetation into built-up areas increased land surface temperature and urban heat island effects. The predicted model also indicated a decrease in vegetation cover and an increase in built-up areas, leading to higher land surface temperature in the future.

Spatiotemporal assessment of land use/land cover change and associated carbon emissions and uptake in the Mekong River Basin

Xiaojing Tang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the land use and land cover change in the Mekong River Basin from 2001 to 2019, showing that the establishment of plantations and agricultural expansion are the major components of land use change in the region. The study found that most deforested areas were converted into tree plantations, with carbon uptake from new plantations offsetting almost half of the emissions from deforestation in the area. Assessing post-deforestation land use is crucial for understanding the carbon consequences of land use change.
