Setting the priorities straight-Species distribution models assist to prioritize conservation targets for the mangroves

Achyut Kumar Banerjee et al.

Summary: Mangrove forests provide important ecosystem services but are declining rapidly. This study aimed to prioritize conservation of species and areas in the IndoWest Pacific region, finding that precipitation and surface elevation influence the distribution of true mangroves, while temperature is important for mangrove associates. Suitable habitat for mangroves is predicted to increase in the future, but areas with high species richness will decrease.

Measuring mangrove-fishery benefits in the Peam Krasaop Fishing Community, Cambodia

Rachel Seary et al.

Summary: Previous studies have focused on the economic value provided by mangroves to fisheries through specific fishing sectors, gear, or target species, without fully capturing the complexity of mangrove-fisheries. This study in southwest Cambodia provides a comprehensive valuation of mangrove benefits to fishing by investigating all fishing sectors, activities, and target species in a specific fishing community. It reveals that the fishing community derives a significant portion of catches and income from mangrove-associated species, suggesting a higher level of mangrove dependency than in other studies. Further research is needed to explore the holistic valuation of mangrove-fishery interactions.

Options for prioritizing sites for biodiversity conservation with implications for 30 by 30

R. Travis Belote et al.

Summary: International and national initiatives aim to conserve at least 30% of lands and waters by 2030. Various methods of prioritizing sites for conservation have been used, with complementarity-based methods (ABF and CAZ) more efficiently representing species than methods based on richness or rarity-weighted richness, especially for taxa with higher beta diversity (amphibians). Area-based conservation targets, such as the 30 by 30 initiative, must distribute limited resources in ways that safeguard all species, and prioritization methods and taxonomic classes vary in spatial locations, configuration, performance, and conservation opportunity.

Towards Circular Economy through Waste to Biomass Energy in Madagascar

Ling Qin et al.

Summary: Biomass energy in Madagascar contributes to about 80% of the total energy supply, but its current application method is still in the earliest stage, posing safety and sustainability issues. There is a need to explore better ways to utilize biomass energy to alleviate the energy crisis and environmental pollution.

Ecological responses, adaptation and mechanisms of mangrove wetland ecosystem to global climate change and anthropogenic activities

You-Shao Wang et al.

Summary: Mangrove wetlands, as unique marine ecosystems, play important ecological roles in maintaining tropical and subtropical marine biodiversity and global biogeochemical processes. However, they are also sensitive to environmental changes and human activities, facing threats to their survival and distribution.

Anthropogenic nitrogen pollution in mangrove ecosystems along Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo coasts in Tanzania

Blandina R. Lugendo et al.

Summary: The study conducted in five mangrove ecosystems in Tanzania revealed anthropogenic nitrogen pollution, with varying degrees of pollution indicated by different nitrogen isotope values. The enrichment of 815N values suggests that polluted sites may receive high loads of domestic sewage from surrounding communities, industries, and agriculture. Proper waste and wastewater management upstream are recommended to protect mangrove ecosystems.

Nature-Based Engineering: A Review on Reducing Coastal Flood Risk With Mangroves

Rik Gijsman et al.

Summary: Mangroves are increasingly recognized as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative for reducing coastal flood risk due to their functionality and persistence. However, the complex implementation of mangroves in flood risk reduction requires improving insights, advancing tools, and adopting an adaptive management approach to enhance their functionality and persistence. Further research efforts on quantifying the variability and uncertainty of mangrove functionality and persistence are necessary for successful integration into coastal flood risk management.

Summary: Mangrove forests, as crucial tropical ecosystems, are undergoing serious decline worldwide. Various nations have taken actions to protect and promote the sustainable use of these valuable resources. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals have set specific targets for the conservation and restoration of mangrove forests by the year 2020.
