Characterization and biodegradability assessment of water-soluble fraction of oily sludge using stir bar sorptive extraction and GCxGC-TOF MS

Priyankar Chand et al.

Summary: Percolation of water through oily sludge during storage and handling can lead to soil and groundwater contamination. In this study, the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of oily sludge, obtained by equilibrating the sludge with water, was analyzed. The WSF contained dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as well as various organic compounds such as quinolines, naphthalenes, and phenol derivatives. A consortium of three bacterial strains was found capable of degrading the WSF, with Bacillus cereus showing the highest degradation rate for certain substances. Biodegradation of WSF led to the removal of n-alkanes within 2 days.

Application of Green Surfactants in the Remediation of Soils Contaminated by Hydrocarbons

Israel Goncalves Sales da Silva et al.

Summary: The use of green surfactants for the treatment of contaminated soils is a biocompatible, efficient, and attractive alternative. Three different green surfactants were tested for their emulsification, dispersion, and removal abilities on hydrophobic contaminants, showing promising results in removing motor oil from different types of soils. The biosurfactant in particular demonstrated great potential in reducing toxicity and effectively removing contaminants.
