Dynamic response during mode switching of unitized regenerative fuel cells with orientational flow channels

Hang Guo et al.

Summary: The oxygen side flow channel structures have a significant influence on the dynamic response of relevant parameters during the operation mode switching procedures of a unitized regenerative fuel cell. The study compared the influence of eight oxygen-side channels on the mode switching process and found that the required time for parameters to reach a stable state in the fuel cell mode is longer when using orientational flow channels. Additionally, different flow channel structures affect the time required to stabilize each parameter during mode switching, but do not change the characteristics of the stable state mode.

Performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells with honeycomb-like flow channel design

Shuanyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The honeycomb-like flow channel was proposed and studied for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), showing advantages such as lower oxygen non-uniformity, reduced pressure drop, and higher current density compared to parallel and serpentine flow channels. Effects of different gas diffusion layer thicknesses and porosities on the honeycomb-like flow channel performance were investigated.

Rui Jiao Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional, non-isothermal, two-phase agglomerate model considering the porosity difference of the gas diffusion layer was established, and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the influence of different coefficients on the overall cell performance. The results showed that different coefficients have varying effects on the cell characteristics at different voltages.

Summary: This work successfully developed a facile method to prepare a gas diffusion layer (GDL) with three functional layers using short carbon fiber and carbon nanotube. The thickness of the GDL can be controlled by adjusting the material content, and it has high flexibility suitable for developing high-performance flexible electronics. The fuel cell with this GDL showed a 19% improvement in power density compared to the conventional method.

Summary: This study develops a modified catalyst layer agglomerate model that considers coupled local oxygen and ionic transport and incorporates it into a multiphase, non-isothermal proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) model. A general classification criterion for catalyst layer design is proposed, and the respective contributions of local oxygen and ionic transport under different design modes are elucidated.

Optimization of gas diffusion layer in high temperature PEMFC with the focuses on thickness and porosity

Lingchao Xia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of gas diffusion layer (GDL) thickness and porosity on flow uniformity, diffusion flux, and ohmic resistance in a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) using a numerical non-isothermal 3D model. The research reveals that increasing GDL thickness and porosity leads to higher flow uniformity and ohmic resistance, but the influence on diffusion flux is opposite. The optimal GDL thickness and porosity are identified for improved performance in the fuel cell system.

Impact of gas diffusion layer spatial variation properties on water management and performance of PEM fuel cells

Xiao Ma et al.

Summary: The study reveals that spatial variation in porosity and wettability distribution in gas diffusion layer can affect liquid water saturation profile, fuel cell performance, and membrane water content. Higher operating pressure improves performance, while increased anode inlet humidity results in higher membrane water content. The wettability distribution also plays a role in water management and performance of fuel cells, though its influence is more indirect than porosity.

Implications of non-uniform porosity distribution in gas diffusion layer on the performance of a high temperature PEM fuel cell

Brajesh Kumar Kanchan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the implications of non-uniform porosity distribution in GDL on the performance of PEMFC. It found that the performance is best when the porosity of GDL decreases logarithmically in the streamwise direction, and deteriorates when it decreases sinusoidally. Additionally, the effects of non-uniform porosity distribution are more pronounced at higher current densities.
