Hedging at the rear edge: Intraspecific trait variability drives the trajectory of marginal populations in a widespread boreal tree species

Emmanuelle Pelletier et al.

Summary: Rear-edge populations at the warm margin of species distribution are expected to rely more on intraspecific phenotypic variation for their persistence. In this study, the role of variation in cone serotiny for the maintenance of rear-edge populations of fire-prone jack pine was investigated. The findings suggest that rear-edge populations can rely on a dual life-history strategy to ensure survival and regeneration in the absence of frequent wildfires.

Can long-lived species keep pace with climate change? Evidence of local persistence potential in a widespread conifer

Summary: The study highlights the impact of landscape on genetic structure and performance of tree populations, with local climate conditions influencing survival and growth patterns. Some populations may not currently occupy their climatic optimum, but genetically diverse and phenotypically plastic populations of trees have high persistence potential.

Increasing fire and the decline of fire adapted black spruce in the boreal forest

Jennifer L. Baltzer et al.

Summary: Intensifying wildfire activity and climate change are driving rapid forest compositional shifts in boreal North America, potentially leading to a loss of black spruce dominance. Following fires, post-fire regeneration failure is common for black spruce, while forests dominated by jack pine or broad-leaved trees show more resilience. Climate moisture deficits and increased fire activity may erode the remaining resilience in black spruce forests, pushing the system towards a tipping point not seen in thousands of years.
