Parameter optimization of toroidal tuned liquid column dampers for suppressing multi-directional harmonic vibration of structures

Hao Ding et al.

Summary: This article investigates the optimization of the toroidal tuned liquid column damper (TTLCD) for suppressing harmonic vibration. The closed-form solution for the TTLCD-structure system is derived, and based on this solution, optimization is carried out to obtain design tables with optimum parameters. The study also performs a parametric investigation of key parameters affecting the damping properties of the TTLCD-structure system, revealing how to produce optimal damping effects. Additionally, a design example of the TTLCD is illustrated and compared to a traditional TLCD.

Understanding and exploiting the nonlinear behavior of tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) for structural vibration control by means of a nonlinear reduced-order model (ROM)

Zili Zhang

Summary: This paper investigates the nonlinear behavior of tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) and its effects on vibration control effectiveness, revealing different liquid behaviors and damper types impacting the effectiveness. Tuned TMD generally outperforms tuned TLD, but when both dampers are detuned, a shallow-water TLD may outperform TMD as excitation amplitude increases, while a deep-water TLD has less amplitude-dependent performance and is more robust.

Identification and semi-active control of structures with abrupt stiffness degradations

Simon Schleiter et al.

Summary: This paper presents a vibration control algorithm combined with a nonlinear system identification method for variable stiffness tuned mass dampers (VS-TMDs) to control multistory shear frame structures with abrupt stiffness degradations. The proposed stiffness variable control (SVC) algorithm, based on the mitigation of potential energy, and the adaptive unscented Kalman filter (A-UKF) scheme are utilized for system parameter identification. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms passive TMD control by successfully detecting abrupt stiffness changes and adapting damper stiffness.

Optimal TMD design for floating offshore wind turbines considering model uncertainties and physical constraints

Mohit Verma et al.

Summary: This paper presents an efficient framework for optimal design of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) for response control of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs). The design of TMD is cast as a feedback control problem, with parameters optimized using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and an iterative procedure. Model uncertainties and physical constraints are also considered in the design process. The designed TMDs are found to be effective for all load cases, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for optimal tuning of TMDs for response control of FOWTs.

Anupam Das

Summary: This study investigates the effects of a submerged cylinder on sloshing responses in a partially filled U-shaped container and explores the vibration control capability of the system under dynamic loads. Experimental and numerical simulations reveal that increasing the length or diameter of the cylinder enhances the overall damping capability of the container. Additionally, as a damper, the device effectively reduces the response of a structural frame to harmonic and earthquake loads.

Effectiveness of a tiny tuned liquid damper on mitigating wind-induced responses of cylindrical solar tower based on elastic wind tunnel tests

Yafeng Li et al.

Summary: A tiny TLD was designed and manufactured to mitigate wind-induced responses of a 243-meter-high solar tower. Wind tunnel tests and parameter studies were conducted to systematically investigate the effectiveness of the TLD, showing significant reduction in wind-induced responses. Efficiency of TLDs is sensitive to frequency ratio, TLD height, and mass ratio, with effectiveness higher at critical wind velocities.
