Selection of pulse-like ground motions with strong velocity-pulses using moving-average filtering

Zhiwang Chang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new approach using moving-average filtering to select ground motions with strong velocity-pulses. The high-frequency content of ground motions is filtered out, smooth waveforms are extracted, and velocity pulses are captured using the peak point method. The pulse-energy relative to the total energy of the ground motion is used as the pulse indicator to select pulse-like records. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified and pulse-like features are observed in different orientations.

Evaluation of Earthquake Response Spectra Directionality Using Stochastic Simulations

Alan Poulos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the directionality characteristics of earthquake ground-motion intensity using synthetic ground motions and compares them to recorded ground motions. The results show that the orientation dependence of horizontal response spectra is primarily explained by the finite significant duration of earthquake ground motion causing inherent randomness in response spectra, rather than by some physical mechanism causing polarization of shaking.

A Modified Algorithm to identify the strongest velocity pulse in three orthogonal components of ground motions

Tianci Zhao et al.

Summary: The proposed algorithm based on wavelet analysis can accurately identify velocity pulses in ground motion and expand the identification range. The study also shows that the amplitude and period of the strongest velocity pulse are influenced by magnitude and fault distance, with velocity pulses tending more towards the horizontal direction under large magnitude earthquakes.
