Ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction-mediated miR-144-5p overexpression enhances the anti-tumor effect of paclitaxel on thyroid carcinoma by targeting STON2

Xuefeng Chen et al.

Summary: The effects of miR-144-5p and paclitaxel (PTX) on thyroid carcinoma were investigated in this study. MiR-144-5p was found to be low-expressed in thyroid carcinoma and directly down-regulated the level of STON2. Overexpression of miR-144-5p and treatment with PTX inhibited the viability, proliferation, migration, and invasion of thyroid carcinoma cells. Furthermore, miR-144-5p overexpression enhanced the inhibiting effect of PTX on tumor volume, weight, and Ki67 level in a xenotransplant tumor model. These effects were mediated by targeting STON2 and up-regulating E-cadherin expression while down-regulating MMP-9 and N-cadherin expression.

Ultrasound-mediated disruption of the blood tumor barrier for improved therapeutic delivery

T. A. Arsiwala et al.

Summary: The blood-brain barrier (BBB) serves as a major barrier limiting drug passage into the brain, while the blood-tumor barrier (BTB) forms around tumors and remains effective in preventing chemotherapy delivery. Focused ultrasound is a noninvasive technique that can disrupt the BBB transiently, aiding in increased drug accumulation within targeted brain areas.
