Design of locally buckling cold-formed steel built-up columns formed unlipped channel sections

Akshay Mangal Mahar et al.

Summary: This study proposes a design procedure for predicting the local buckling strength of cold-formed steel built-up I and box section columns. The procedure combines the Effective Width Method and the Direct Strength Method. Finite element analysis and compression tests were performed to validate the models used in the study. The results show that the local buckling strength of built-up I sections is equal to the sum of its section' strength, whereas for box sections, the strength can be higher due to the nesting of sections. The proposed design procedure provides more accurate strength predictions for the built-up section columns compared to the existing methods.

Direct Strength Method for Cold-Formed Steel Unlipped Channel Columns Subject to Local Buckling

Akshay Mangal Mahar et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the strength of unlipped channel columns using the Direct Strength Method, finding that the aspect ratio significantly affects the local buckling strength of plain unlipped channel sections. The current DSM design specified in codes ignores this parameter, resulting in unconservative designs.

Global buckling strength of discretely fastened back-to-back built-up cold-formed steel columns

Akshay Mangal Mahar et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new design equation for built-up cold-formed steel columns to address inconsistencies in the AISI S100 specification. By considering the interaction between fastener spacing and overall slenderness ratio, a compound slenderness ratio is proposed to provide more accurate strength predictions.

Simplified design method of cold-formed steel columns with built-up box sections

Xuhong Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the buckling behavior and ultimate strength of axially loaded pin-ended cold-formed steel built-up box section columns, considering the effects of local and local-flexural interactive buckling modes. Experimental and theoretical research were conducted, and a simplified design method was proposed based on test results and numerical analysis. The study highlights the importance of factors such as slenderness ratio, web depth-to-thickness ratio, and screw spacing in determining the ultimate strength of built-up columns.

A Computational Study on Buckling Behavior of Cold-Formed Steel Built-Up Columns Using Compound Spline Finite Strip Method

Akshay Mangal Mahar et al.

Summary: This paper presents a computational methodology for calculating the critical buckling stress of built-up cold-formed steel columns with discrete fasteners, comparing with the buckling behavior of single sections. The study shows that a significant increment in buckling stress for a built-up section is observed when the fastener spacing is kept less than the critical buckling half-wavelength of respective modes. Additionally, the presence of sheathed wall studs leads to the elimination of global buckling deformations.

Built-up back-to-back cold-formed steel compression members failing by local and distortional buckling

Son Tung Vy et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the compression behavior and capacity of built-up back-to-back CFS channel sections, examining the effects of screw fastener characteristics and arrangements. It proposes a simple DSM-based design method after conducting compression tests, developing finite element models, and conducting a parametric study. The study aims to improve the accuracy of current design equations and provide recommendations for CFS design standards.

Behavior and Design of Cold-Formed Steel Bolted Connections Subjected to Combined Actions

Seyed Mohammad Mojtabaei et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the failure mode of cold-formed steel bolted connections subject to combined axial compression, shear, and bending moment. Design equations for the compressive capacity of CFS bolted connections are developed based on geometric and material non-linear analysis with imperfections. Interaction equations for combined loading conditions are proposed, and reliability analyses are performed according to Eurocode and AISI standards. The findings suggest that a linear equation accurately captures the interaction between bending moment and axial force, with the effect of shear force on bending moment capacity being negligible.

Tests and design of built-up section columns

Dang Khoa Phan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the strength and behavior of built-up section columns composed of three or four lipped channel sections. It was found that singly-symmetric columns typically experienced local, distortional, and/or flexural-torsional buckling failure modes, while doubly-symmetric columns usually failed in local, distortional, and/or flexural buckling modes. The research proposed a design procedure for built-up sections experiencing flexural-torsional buckling, which is not explicitly stipulated in current design standards or previous studies.

Distortional buckling behavior of cold-formed steel built-up closed section columns

Yanchun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distortional buckling behavior of cold-formed steel built-up columns, examining the effect of screw spacing on their mechanical properties. Results showed that the built-up columns exhibited a combination effect when the screw spacing was less than a certain value, and gradually approached the sum of two single columns when the screw spacing exceeded that value. Additionally, five different models were proposed to predict the critical load of distortional buckling.
