Tunable stiffness in fish robotics: mechanisms and advantages

Daniel Quinn et al.

Summary: The emerging theme in fish-inspired robotics is flexibility, which can improve thrust and efficiency during locomotion. Fish solve the problem of optimal stiffness by using muscular activity to tune their body and fin stiffness in real-time. Fish-inspired robots use polymer actuators, adjustable leaf springs, or artificial tendons to mechanically tune stiffness.

Monolithic binary stiffness building blocks for mechanical digital machines

P. R. Kuppens et al.

Summary: This paper introduces two essential building blocks with binary stiffness for mechanical digital machines. By using static balancing to create extreme stiffness states and a mechanical bistable switch for toggling stiffness states, the controllability of stiffness is improved.

Design of a compliant load cell with adjustable stiffness

M. Smreczak et al.

Summary: This article presents a novel design of a compliant load cell with mechanically adjustable stiffness, enabling force sensitivity adaptation to specific application requirements. The system utilizes a preloaded spring for stiffness adjustment, allows fabrication at a centimeter-scale, and demonstrates improved stability compared to MEMS. Empirical validation on a large-scale stainless-steel prototype shows effective reduction of stiffness and high sensitivity in force sensing.

A new type of spherical flexure joint based on tetrahedron elements

Jelle Rommers et al.

Summary: This paper presents two new designs of spherical flexure joints and their equivalent planar designs, featuring tetrahedron-shaped elements connected by blade flexures with certain stiffness terms dependent on the properties of the flexures. Finite-element simulations show good correspondence with optimized equations for the stiffness terms, capturing qualitative behavior effectively.
