Sulfadiazine removal by peroxymonosulfate activation with sulfide-modified microscale zero-valent iron: Major radicals, the role of sulfur species, and particle size effect

Chen Ling et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that sulfide-modified zero-valent iron (S-Fe-0) can enhance the catalytic performance for peroxymonosulfate activation. The sulfur species formed on the Fe-0 surface play a crucial role, with S-2(-) and SO32- accelerating the conversion of Fe3+ to Fe2+. Radical quenching experiments identified center dot OH as the major contributor to sulfadiazine removal in S-Fe-0/PMS system. The study also showed that smaller Fe-0 particles (< 8 μm) were more effective in the sulfidation treatment method.

Summary: This review discusses the contamination status, sources, and ecological risks of antibiotics in surface water in East and Southeast Asia. Antibiotics were found to be ubiquitous in surface water, with different concentrations and distribution ranges in East Asian countries like China and South Korea compared to Southeast Asian nations. Effluent from wastewater treatment plants, aquaculture and livestock production activities, and urban sewage were identified as principal sources of antibiotics in surface water, while the ecological risks associated with antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance were highlighted. Collaborative efforts from various stakeholders are necessary to manage and reduce the burden of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in water bodies of East and Southeast Asian countries.
