Challenges in Solvent-Free Methods for Manufacturing Electrodes and Electrolytes for Lithium-Based Batteries

Nina Verdier et al.

Summary: The challenges of lithium battery manufacturing lie in cost and environmental impact. Solvent-casting method is commonly used but has disadvantages. Solvent-free processes, including heat-based and spray-based methods, show promise in developing cost-effective and environmentally friendly lithium batteries. Among these methods, hot-pressing and melt processing are the most commonly used alternatives for both polymer-based electrolytes and electrodes.

Core-shell Ni-rich NMC-Nanocarbon cathode from scalable solvent-free mechanofusion for high-performance 18650 Li-ion batteries

Nutthaphon Phattharasupakun et al.

Summary: A surface coating approach using carbon nanosphere shell was introduced to improve the drawbacks of Ni-rich LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode, showing higher Li utilization and better stability. The in operando XRD analysis revealed the smooth phase transition of NMC811cs, while the online Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry demonstrated extended onset potential of CO2 and H-2 evolution. Overall, the NMC811cs prototype battery exhibited higher specific capacity, energy, and cycling stability compared to pristine NMC811.

Competition between activation energy and migration entropy in lithium ion conduction in superionic NASICON-type Li1-3xGaxZr2(PO4)3

Shanshan Duan et al.

Summary: The study found that in the Li1-3xGaxZr2(PO4)(3) system, Ga substitution led to a sharp increase in the prefactor, attributed to the increased migration entropy, while the increase in activation energy could be rationalized in terms of the inductive effect. These two competitive factors together determined the final ionic conductivity.
