Investigating habits in humans with a symmetrical outcome-revaluation task

P. Watson et al.

Summary: The article presents a novel outcome-revaluation task with a symmetrical design to study habit in humans. The task provides evidence for stimulus-driven habits and the impact of self-reported behavioral automaticity on behavioral flexibility.

Habits and Goals in Human Behavior: Separate but Interacting Systems

Wendy Wood et al.

Summary: Habitual behaviors can be triggered in specific contexts regardless of goals, and are often characterized by specific responsiveness and resistance to change. Habitual behaviors and goal pursuit can coexist, but they do not necessarily depend on goals.

Make it a habit: how habit strength, goal importance and self-control predict hand washing behaviour over time during the COVID-19 pandemic

Marleen Gillebaart et al.

Summary: Hand washing is crucial for preventing infectious diseases, including COVID-19. This study found that habit strength and goal importance can buffer the decrease in hand washing behavior over time. Furthermore, personal reminders contribute to hand washing behavior. Therefore, considering these psychological variables is important when designing interventions to promote hand hygiene.

Habit formation of preventive behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic: a longitudinal study of physical distancing and hand washing

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: Dutch respondents showed strong intentions to adhere to preventive measures, with adherence rates between 70% and 90%. Their behaviors were reported to become more automatic over time, especially in maintaining physical distancing. Both intention and habit strength predicted subsequent adherence for all six behaviors. In later phases of the study, the predictive power of intention decreased for respondents with strong habits in physical distancing behaviors, but not for hand washing.

Summary: AOMIC is a collection of three datasets with multimodal MRI data from a large set of healthy participants, including structural, diffusion-weighted, and functional BOLD MRI data. The extensively annotated event-files for task-based fMRI during various paradigms are available. All data are publicly available on the OpenNeuro platform after undergoing extensive quality control.

Supraspinal nociceptive networks in neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury

Vincent Huynh et al.

Summary: Neuropathic pain following spinal cord injury involves plastic changes along the whole neuroaxis, with current neuroimaging studies showing a relationship between pain intensity and grey matter volume and connectivity changes. The underlying neural processes related to pain extent in neuropathic pain are still unknown.

Habit formation following routine-based versus time-based cue planning: A randomized controlled trial

Jan Keller et al.

Summary: The study found that linking nutrition behavior to a daily routine or specific time was equally effective for habit formation. Repeated plan enactment was identified as a key predictor for automaticity. Both routine-based and time-based cue planning interventions led to increases in automaticity and plan enactment.

Summary: The study developed and validated the If-Then Planning Scale (ITPS) to measure individual differences in the ability to make effective if-then plans for goal attainment. Results showed systematic associations between if-then planning and the attainment of environmental goals, socioeconomic status, and academic achievement.
