Overcrowding and COVID-19 mortality across US counties: Are disparities growing over time?

Christina Kamis et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the impact of county-level household overcrowding on disparities in COVID-19 mortality in the United States, finding that the percentage of overcrowded households is a stronger predictor of COVID-19 mortality during later stages of the pandemic. Despite a relationship between overcrowding and poverty at the county-level, overcrowding plays an independent role in predicting COVID-19 mortality.

Why Couldn't I Go in To See Him? Bereaved Families' Perceptions of End-of-Life Communication During COVID-19

Shelli Feder et al.

Summary: This study examined bereaved families' perceptions of end-of-life communication in VA medical centers during the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying contextual factors and characteristics of high-quality communication. Families valued staff availability for remote communication, timely updates on patient condition and care plan. Low-quality communication caused profound distress and affected the quality of dying and bereavement. Innovative strategies are needed to ensure high-quality communication despite pandemic-related visitation restrictions.

Ebru Kaya et al.

Summary: This study introduces a three-step scalable model for providing high-quality palliative care during the COVID-19 pandemic, including a consultant model, embedded model, and cohorted end-of-life unit for COVID-19 positive patients. It aims to ensure specialist palliative care capacity and to rapidly upskill clinicians to deliver basic palliative care, potentially serving as a template for future pandemics or natural disasters.

Association between overcrowded households, multigenerational households, and COVID-19: a cohort study

Arnab K. Ghosh et al.

Summary: Overcrowded and multigenerational households were found to be independent risk factors for suspected COVID-19. In the early phase of the surge in COVID cases, social distancing measures that increase housebound populations may inadvertently but temporarily increase SARS-CoV-2 transmission risk and COVID-19 disease in these populations.
