Reading the mind in cartoon eyes: Comparing human versus cartoon emotion recognition in those with high and low levels of autistic traits

Gray Atherton et al.

Summary: Research suggests that individuals with high levels of autistic traits may have difficulty in facial emotion recognition, but this may not be the case when evaluating anthropomorphic agents. The study found that those with clinical levels of autistic traits performed worse on standard tests but not on cartoon versions, indicating that the impairment may be specific to evaluating human agents.

Alterations in Rapid Social Evaluations in Individuals with High Autism Traits

Casey Becker et al.

Summary: The study found that adults with higher Autism Spectrum Quotient scores are more likely to perceive neutral faces as threatening compared to those with lower scores. Both groups rated neutral faces as more threatening when primed with fearful emotional faces, while happy primes did not affect the ratings of neutral faces. These results suggest a generalized threat bias in rapid social evaluations may be associated with higher autism traits.
