Untangling the interactions among the Sustainable Development Goals in China

Junze Zhang et al.

Summary: This study assesses the spatial and temporal variation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) interactions in China. The results show trade-offs between Essential Needs & Objectives and Essential Needs & Governance in eastern provinces, while synergies are observed between all three SDG categories in some central and western provinces. However, the synergy trend has weakened in the past decade, mainly due to regional differences in progress towards SDG7. Provinces need to enhance synergies between SDG12 and other goals to tackle trade-offs in Essential Needs and Objectives, and promoting progress towards SDG7 will contribute to balanced development.

Assessment and Evaluation of IWRM Implementation in Palawan, Philippines

Jennifer C. Cacal et al.

Summary: According to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6), the Philippines is committed to sustainably managing water resources through integrated water resource management (IWRM). However, there is currently a lack of consolidated data on the implementation of IWRM at the sub-national level. This study focuses on Palawan Province and finds that while there are existing water management schemes, their full potential is hindered by various constraints.

Decoupling of SDGs followed by re-coupling as sustainable development progresses

Xutong Wu et al.

Summary: This study used a correlational network approach and a global SDG database to analyze the evolution of SDG interactions. The research found that as the level of sustainable development increases, the interactions among SDGs show nonlinear changes. At low and high levels of sustainable development, SDGs are both more positively and more negatively connected, while at middle levels, they cluster into more isolated positive connection groups.

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the post-pandemic era

Wenwu Zhao et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic poses significant challenges to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This paper highlights ongoing challenges facing the SDGs, identifies the effects of COVID-19 on SDG progress, and proposes a systematic framework for promoting SDG achievement. The pandemic has exacerbated existing issues and hindered progress, but also provided opportunities for technological developments and environmental improvements. Post-pandemic actions should focus on classification, coordination, and collaboration to strengthen global cooperation and foster sustainable development.

A review of the water-related energy consumption of the food system in nexus studies

K. M. Nazmul Islam et al.

Summary: This study reviewed and analyzed assessment research on water-related energy consumption in the food system, revealing different research trends and drivers in various countries. Most studies focused on irrigation energy consumption in the agricultural phase, while neglecting more energy-intensive processes such as food processing and cooking.

The three major axes of terrestrial ecosystem function

Mirco Migliavacca et al.

Summary: The leaf economics spectrum and the global spectrum of plant forms and functions revealed fundamental axes of variation in plant traits, representing different ecological strategies shaped by the evolutionary development of plant species. Ecosystem functions depend on environmental conditions and the traits of species within ecological communities. However, the axes of variation of ecosystem functions are largely unknown, limiting our understanding of ecosystem responses to anthropogenic drivers and environmental changes.

Extended water-energy nexus contribution to environmentally-related sustainable development goals

Xue-Chao Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the importance of water-energy extended nexuses for environmental sustainable development goals, highlighting the confusion and substitution of specific terms with more attractive terms like nexus. Methodologies need to be adequately integrated or expanded to assess diverse water-energy extended nexuses and evaluate resource flows in multiple regions and sectors for impacts on environment and economy.

A sustainable development pathway for climate action within the UN 2030 Agenda

Bjoern Soergel et al.

Summary: Current actions are insufficient to achieve both the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Integrated model-based analysis suggests that strong interventions and ambitious lifestyle changes are necessary for real progress. Climate policies, economic development, education, technological progress, and less resource-intensive lifestyles are crucial elements for progress, but additional sustainable development measures are needed to reach the targets.

Articulating the effect of food systems innovation on the Sustainable Development Goals

Mario Herrero et al.

Summary: Food system innovations are crucial in achieving multiple Sustainable Development Goals, but they can lead to profound changes that impact different parts of the global food system simultaneously. It is important to embed innovations as part of systemic changes to avoid unintended negative consequences and address emerging trade-offs involving social aspects like inequality and social justice. Well-planned transition pathways, careful monitoring of key indicators, and transparent science targets at the local level are essential in managing trade-offs with undesirable outcomes.
