Global trade network and CH4 emission outsourcing

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: The intensification of globalization has led to the outsourcing of anthropogenic methane emissions, impacting the complex CH4 flow patterns in the global trade network. Research reveals that over a quarter of global anthropogenic CH4 emissions in 2014 are linked to international trade, with the top 20 economies contributing to about 70% of total CH4 emission flows. Emerging economies also have significant roles in the global CH4 flow network, and the core-periphery structure highlights the importance of certain hub economies in CH4 emissions.

Land-use emissions embodied in international trade

Chaopeng Hong et al.

Summary: International trade separates consumption of goods from their environmental impacts, including land-use emissions. This study evaluated the embodied land-use emissions in global trade, finding a significant portion of emissions and agricultural land are related to agricultural products consumed in different regions. Land-use change is the main source of emissions, with the largest transfers occurring between lower-income countries and more industrialized regions. Thus, achieving emission reduction and sustainable development may depend on improving supply chain transparency.

A complex network perspective on embodiment of air pollutants from global oil refining industry

Jialu Wu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that air pollutants from the oil refining industry can spread across borders through international trade. Collaborative emission reduction among countries is essential and key countries play a significant role in the global trade network.

Towards more effective air pollution governance strategies in China: A systematic review of the literature

Yong Yang et al.

Summary: China's collaborative governance mode for air pollution is a research focus and strategy promoted by the Central Government. Despite the implementation of many national laws and policies, there has been no comprehensive discussion on the current state of collaborative governance in China. This study systematically analyzes the evolution of practices and previous studies, providing policy recommendations and research limitations.

Inter-provincial sectoral embodied CO2 net-transfer analysis in China based on hypothetical extraction method and complex network analysis

Yuying Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the inter-provincial sectoral linkages of embodied CO2 in 2012 and 2015 in China using the hypothetical extraction method. Key sectors with large linkages are mainly heavy industries in North China, with the electricity industry as the largest net CO2 outflow sector and the construction industry as the largest net inflow sector. The CO2 transfer networks show closely connected and spatial clustering features, reflecting the close linkage between geographically adjacent sectors. Important media sectors are mostly located in northwest China with small industrial scale and linkage degrees, such as the transport equipment industry in Shanxi. Emission reduction policies should be planned overall and tailored to local conditions.

Food and feed trade has greatly impacted global land and nitrogen use efficiencies over 1961-2017

Zhaohai Bai et al.

Summary: This study quantified land and nitrogen losses from agricultural trade in over 240 countries over the past six decades, revealing complex impacts on global resource use efficiency. While crop trade has increased global land and partial fertilizer nitrogen productivities, it has also decreased global cropland productivity when expressed on an energy basis per calorie.
