Sub-national water-food-labour nexus in Colombia

T. Distefano et al.

Summary: Poorer countries often struggle to balance the improvement of socio-economic conditions with the maintenance of key ecological processes. Using Colombia as a case study, researchers conducted an analysis of the water-food-labour nexus to examine the virtual water trade and virtual informal labour flows within the country. The study revealed high interdependence between different administrative departments and economic sectors, with wealthy departments depending on resources from neighboring trading partners. The findings also highlighted extreme poverty conditions in economically isolated departments and income inequality in the food production sectors. Additionally, departments that are net exporters of virtual water face water stress, which may be worsened by future climate change impacts.

Macroeconomic, social and environmental impacts of a circular economy up to 2050: A meta-analysis of prospective studies

Glenn A. Aguilar-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This paper reviews over 300 circular economy scenarios and finds that by 2030, implementing ambitious circular economy scenarios could lead to a 'win-win-win' situation with marginal or incremental changes in GDP and employment, while significantly reducing CO2 emissions. Additionally, the paper discusses modeling features such as resource taxes, technology changes, and consumption patterns that have the greatest impact on GDP, job creation, and CO2 emissions.

Trading radical for incremental change: the politics of a circular economy transition in the German packaging sector

Machteld Catharina Simoens et al.

Summary: Understanding environmental politics is crucial for sustainability transitions. The transition politics of the shift to a circular economy in the German packaging sector is influenced by actors' fears of radical changes. This fear led to a lock-in of two conflicting organizational designs, which was eventually resolved by trading radical for incremental change but left unresolved conflicts and challenges.

Creating a harmonized time series of environmentally-extended input-output tables to assess the evolution of the US bioeconomy-A retrospective analysis of corn ethanol and soybean biodiesel

Andre F. T. Avelino et al.

Summary: Expanding the domestic bioeconomy can help diversify the use of national resources and reduce emissions. Evaluating the sustainability of a growing bioeconomy is complex and requires a comprehensive analysis framework. Analysis of the evolution of biofuel industry in the US shows increased impacts on energy, but decreased environmental impacts on an energy-unit basis over time due to industry maturation and scale-up.
