FACTORS INFLUENCING THE PURCHASE OF CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRODUCTS: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF MALAYSIA AND TURKEY

Muhammad Tahir Jan

Summary: Irresponsible production and consumption are the main causes of environmental damage. To address this issue, the concept of circular economy is proposed, and the impact of critical factors related to circular economy on consumer behavior and purchase intention is empirically investigated. The findings of this research can help policymakers develop strategies that are sustainable and aligned with the philosophy of circular economy, leading to positive consumer behavior.

Research avenues for uncovering the rebound effects of the circular economy: A systematic literature review

Julija Metic et al.

Summary: Circular Economy (CE) is increasingly seen as a way to achieve sustainable development, but the implementation of CE initiatives often leads to rebound effects (RE) that limit its sustainability potential. This paper provides a systematic literature review (SLR) on RE, focusing on definitions, triggers and drivers, types and mechanisms, and measurement approaches. A conceptual framework of RE is proposed based on the results of the SLR, and several gaps for future research on RE within CE are identified.

Willingness to purchase refurbished products sold online: a qualitative inquiry of young consumers from an emerging market

Jighyasu Gaur et al.

Summary: The study identifies six broad attributes/factors that influence young consumers' willingness to purchase refurbished products, including purchase attributes, product attributes, credibility, reviews/support, refurbishment process, and ecological factors. Each attribute contains unique characteristics that are specific to young consumers, such as greater trust in online platforms/stores, preference for video reviews, and historical information of the product. This study integrates three literature streams: consumer behavior in online/offline contexts, young consumers' inclination towards online purchases, and willingness to purchase refurbished products.

Product Labels for the Circular Economy: Are Customers Willing to Pay for Circular?

Robert H. W. Boyer et al.

Summary: The study investigated consumer responses to circular economy product labels and their willingness to pay for products with different levels of circularity, finding that most customers prefer more circular products and are willing to pay more for products with low or moderate levels of circular content. However, willingness to pay decreases as the proportion of recirculated content increases.

Consumption in the Circular Economy: Learning from Our Mistakes

Dimitris Georgantzis Garcia et al.

Summary: The Circular Economy is gaining attention but the role of consumption remains under-researched. Two key pillars extracted are the hierarchy of circular strategies, with reduction being prioritized, and the need for the CE to aim for sustainable development in addition to just loop strategies.

Consumption Work in the circular economy: A research agenda

Kersty Hobson et al.

Summary: Circular Economy frameworks play a crucial role in reducing global resource use and environmental despoilment. However, challenges remain in making Circular Economy actionable, one of which is the emergence of the 'circular consumer' and the varied forms of Consumption Work required for success. Focusing on Consumption Work offers a different perspective on what it takes to be a circular consumer and the implications for Circular Economy success.

Circular Food Behaviors: A Literature Review

Natalia Rohenkohl do Canto et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of circular food behaviors in literature, categorizing them into linear, transitioning, and circular behaviors. It highlights the predominance of empirical data collection in Europe, focuses on behaviors related to protein alternatives, food waste, and upcycled foods, and emphasizes the importance of consumer education and communication. Circular behaviors are characterized by their systemic approach, defining consumers as doers or prosumers, pursuing long-term sustainability goals, showing high engagement of skilled consumers, and being supported by technologies. Future research should consider the social dimension of sustainability and adopt a systemic view of circular food behaviors.
