Sustainable kenaf/bamboo fibers/clay hybrid nanocomposites: properties, environmental aspects and applications

M. Jawaid et al.

Summary: The environmental benefits, renewability, and low cost of natural fiber-based hybrid composites have attracted significant interest. However, the hydrophilic behavior and high moisture absorption of natural fibers lead to poor bonding and reduced performance of the composites. This can be addressed by hybridizing natural fibers with inorganic fillers, such as nanoclay. Nanoclay improves the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites and reduces the impact of moisture. This review focuses on the use of kenaf and bamboo fibers, as well as the effect of different nanoclay on the properties of natural fiber-based hybrid composites.

Morphology control of poly(lactic) acid/polypropylene blend composite by using silanized cellulose fibers extracted from coir fibers

Marya Raji et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to use cellulose fibers as Janus nanocylinders to improve the phase separation and coalescence in poly(lactic) acid/polypropylene bio-blend polymers by promoting the selective localization of cellulose fibers at the interface through chemical modification. The mechanical and rheological properties of the resulting nanocomposites were greatly enhanced compared to the neat matrix, which can be attributed to the improved adhesion between the polymers and the tunable morphology of the bio-blends.

Fundamental aspects of the non-covalent modification of cellulose via polymer adsorption

Vishnu Arumughan et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the non-covalent modification of cellulose fibers through the adsorption of functional polymers, focusing on fundamental aspects of polymer adsorption on cellulose surfaces. The correlation of adsorption findings with the Scheutjens-Fleer polymer adsorption theory provides insight into the phenomenon and its context in utilizing cellulose fibers. Studies on model surfaces and cellulose macro-fibers are reviewed to understand the potential of using this approach for tailored material properties.

Alternative optimization routes for improving the performance of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) based plastics

Demetres Briassoulis et al.

Summary: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a group of bio-based polymeric materials formed by microorganisms, include the well-known member Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). Despite PHB's high biodegradability and biocompatibility, its low ductility and susceptibility to thermal degradation limit its applications. Alternative strategies such as modification and blending are needed to enhance the performance of PHB for producing bio-based plastics with improved properties.

Laccase as a Tool in Building Advanced Lignin-Based Materials

Melissa B. Agustin et al.

Summary: Lignin is a promising renewable feedstock with potential as a substitute for fossil-based resources. The use of laccase in catalyzing lignin polymerization and depolymerization presents advantages in mild conditions and non-toxic chemicals, but also poses challenges due to its dual nature. Factors affecting laccase-catalyzed lignin polymerization have been summarized, and the conditions for producing novel lignin hybrids have been critically assessed. Industrial applications, challenges, and opportunities for laccase-assisted lignin valorization have been surveyed to understand the full potential of laccase in lignin-based materials for advanced applications.
