Comparative life cycle assessment of co-pyrolysing sewage sludge and wastewater-grown microalgae for biofuel production

Amirah Syafika Mohd Nasir et al.

Summary: This study compared the life cycle assessment, global warming potential, energy recovery, and economic feasibility of biofuel production via pyrolysis of sewage sludge and microalgae alone or at different ratios. The co-pyrolysis scenarios showed 36-44% lower global warming potential compared to sewage sludge alone. Gas turbine was found to be more effective for energy recovery from pyrolysis gases, compensating for up to 28% of the energy requirement. The drying process accounted for the majority of energy consumption, highlighting the need for improved dewatering process for sustainability and profitability.

Adsorption of p-benzoquinone at low concentrations from aqueous media using biosolid-based activated carbon

Nina Ricci Nicomel et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorptive removal of p-benzoquinone by a biosolid-based activated carbon was investigated, and it was found that the adsorption rate was rapid and the maximum adsorption capacity was high. The biosolid-based activated carbon could effectively lower the residual p-benzoquinone to below the fish-toxicity limit within 1 hour. Therefore, it is a promising method for the removal of p-benzoquinone from aqueous environments.

An economic and global warming impact assessment of common sewage sludge treatment processes in North America

Ziyi Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study develops a life cycle assessment model to evaluate the environmental and economic impact of four common sewage sludge treatment methods in the North American context. The findings suggest that pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion coupled with agricultural land application have lower global warming impact, while composting and pyrolysis have lower life cycle costs compared to alternative treatments.

Microplastic removal from urban stormwater: Current treatments and research gaps

Camryn Stang et al.

Summary: This review examines the effectiveness of different microplastic (MP) removal technologies in stormwater runoff and the performance of typical stormwater treatment systems. The results show that bioretention and filtration systems have high MP removal efficiencies, while wetlands and retention ponds have lower efficiencies. However, the limited research data calls for further investigation to reach definitive conclusions.

Sludge-based activated carbon from two municipal sewage sludge precursors for improved secondary wastewater-treatment discharge-effluent

Claudia V. Montoya-Bautista et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of sludge-based activated carbon (SBAC) sorbent for the removal of contaminants from wastewater. The results showed that SBAC sorbents were effective in removing pollutants from pharmaceutical and personal care products, including commonly used components during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study suggests that sludge-based activated carbon has the potential to be a sustainable waste-to-resources approach for wastewater treatment.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate removal by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): Insights into the effect and mechanism of metal nodes and organic ligands

Changwei Zhao et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different metal nodes and organic ligands were prepared and used to remove perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from water. Among them, MIL-53(Al) showed the best PFOS adsorption performance due to its highest unsaturated metal active sites and smallest pore size, while longer organic ligands were found to contribute to better PFOS entry and performance. The presence of Fe3+ ions in MOFs/PFOS system improved PFOS removal through bridging and interaction, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. These optimized MOFs are promising adsorbents for sustainable removal of PFOS from water.

Busra Sonmez Baghirzade et al.

Summary: Extensive use of PFAS has led to their presence in natural waters, and conventional methods for PFAS removal such as adsorption onto GAC may result in PFAS-laden waste streams. Inadequate disposal of PFAS-laden GAC can reintroduce PFAS into the aquatic cycle, highlighting the need for developing approaches for managing PFAS-laden GAC.
