Why marginal CO2 emissions are not decreasing for US electricity: Estimates and implications for climate policy

Stephen P. Holland et al.

Summary: This paper provides estimates of marginal CO2 emissions from US electricity generation using the most comprehensive data, showing that while average emissions have decreased, marginal emissions have increased due to a shift toward greater reliance on coal. The research also highlights that the increase in electric vehicles may be offset by the emissions from the electricity sector if not significantly transformed.

Fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical approach to model fracture response to injection process in enhanced geothermal systems using displacement discontinuity and finite element method

Mohammad Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: Assessing, predicting, and controlling injection-induced seismicity in enhanced geothermal systems is challenging due to the complex THM processes. This study developed a fully coupled numerical model to assess the behavior of low permeable matrix-fracture during non-isothermal fluid injection. Numerical simulations showed a fully coupled relation between matrix dilation, shrinkage, and non-linear fracture deformation.

Does environmental policy stringency reduce CO2 emissions? Evidence from high-polluted economies

Qin Yirong

Summary: The study aims to analyze the asymmetric effects of environmental policy stringency on CO2 emissions in top emitter's economies such as China, USA, India, Russia, and Japan. The findings show that increasing or decreasing environmental policy stringency can lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions in the long run, and policymakers should consider both positive and negative changes when formulating environment-related regulations.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of chemical reactions on the operation of an enhanced geothermal system. The research findings highlight the significance of injection concentration (cin) as an efficient way to adjust geothermal production, while injection temperature (Tin) has little influence on chemical reactions.

Stimulation mechanism and design of enhanced geothermal systems: A comprehensive review

S. Li et al.

Summary: This work provides a comprehensive review of fracture stimulation in enhanced geothermal systems, including hydraulic stimulation mechanisms, design strategies, and measurement tools. It compares the impacts of different hydraulic stimulation mechanisms on the performance of enhanced geothermal systems and analyzes the hydraulic stimulation design strategies in 19 representative projects worldwide. The difference between hydraulic stimulation operations in geothermal reservoirs and those in oil/gas fields is clarified, aiming to provide useful guidelines for both theoretical research and field operations.

Evolution of fracture aperture and thermal productivity influenced by chemical reaction in enhanced geothermal system

Guofeng Song et al.

Summary: A thermal-hydraulic-chemical coupling model is developed to study the evolution of fracture aperture and geothermal productivity in a triple-well fractured enhanced geothermal system considering silica dissolution and precipitation. The results show that undersaturated injection leads to mineral dissolution, increasing fracture width and permeability, while oversaturated injection results in mineral precipitation, reducing fracture aperture and permeability. Furthermore, the evolution of opening is uneven at different exploitation stages.

Assessing energy diversification policy and sustainability: Bangladesh standpoints

Aminul Islam et al.

Summary: As Bangladesh's economy expands, the country has experienced severe power crises over the decades. With the Government's effective implementation of policies, the country has shown remarkable progress in the energy sector recently. However, the vision of the power sector has not been achieved yet, and there is a need to reform the transmission and distribution sector, address fuel demand and supply management, energy efficiency, and diversify programs for sustainable development. This paper evaluates the regulatory framework changes in the power sector and identifies key issues for affordable and sustainable energy. It also presents a fuzzy rule-based GHG emission predicting system that highlights the variables affecting emissions and suggests effective reduction processes.

A review of geothermal integrated desalination: A sustainable solution to overcome potential freshwater shortages

Mitul Prajapati et al.

Summary: Access to safe drinking water has increased significantly in almost every part of the world over the past few decades, but the UN predicts that by 2026, more than half of the world's population will face water scarcity. Desalination technologies, including thermal and membrane-based methods, provide an alternative source of water. To meet the high energy demand of desalination processes, renewable energy sources such as wind, geothermal, and solar power can be utilized. Geothermal energy integrated desalination processes should be seriously considered as an alternative and renewable energy source for water desalination.

Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical modeling on acid fracturing in carbonatite geothermal reservoirs containing a heterogeneous fracture

Haoran Xu et al.

Summary: Acid fracturing and hydraulic fracturing are two effective methods to enhance productivity of geothermal wells. Designing an optimal scheme of acid fracturing in geothermal reservoirs remains challenging due to complex chemical reactions between acidizing fluids and reservoir rocks. A modeling framework for coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical chemical processes during acid fracturing has been developed and successfully applied to field tests in Beijing, China, revealing the significant impact of natural and human-controlled factors on efficiency.
