Greenhouse gas emissions following biosolids application to farmland: Estimates from the DeNitrification and DeComposition model

Okenna Obi-Njoku et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy of the DNDC model in estimating N2O emissions following biosolids application. The results suggest that the DNDC model is suitable for estimating N2O emissions, but the estimation of CO2 emissions could be improved.

Global soil-derived ammonia emissions from agricultural nitrogen fertilizer application: A refinement based on regional and crop-specific emission factors

Ruoya Ma et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the global emissions of soil NH3 from agricultural N fertilizer use and finds that south-eastern Asia has the highest NH3 EFs for synthetic N fertilizer, while Europe has the lowest. China, India, and America contribute over 60% of global agricultural NH3 emissions from synthetic N fertilizer use.

Identifying N fertilizer management strategies to reduce ammonia volatilization: Towards a site-specific approach

M. Mencaroni et al.

Summary: This study conducted in the Veneto region of Italy proposed a conceptual framework to identify the most effective BATs for reducing NH3 emissions at a site-specific level. The results showed that closed-slot injection is the most promising technology for reducing NH3 emissions, although it may lead to an increase in nitrate leaching in certain cases.

Economic and environmental consequences of nitrogen application rates, timing and methods on corn in Ontario

Aaron De laporte et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adopting optimized agronomic practices in corn production in Ontario can increase farm profits, reduce nitrogen application, decrease N₂O and NH₃ emissions, and lower nitrate leaching. Injection and sidedress methods are more efficient, while the right placement and timing play a crucial role under specific spatial conditions.

The importance of ammonia volatilization in estimating the efficacy of nitrification inhibitors to reduce N2O emissions: A global meta-analysis

Di Wu et al.

Summary: Nitrification inhibitors have been shown to increase NH3 volatilization and subsequent indirect N2O emissions from soils. Responses of NH3 volatilization mainly varied with experimental method, soil pH, NI type, and fertilizer type. Reducing nitrogen application rate may help to improve NIs' overall N2O emission mitigation efficiency.

Assessing the impacts of diversified crop rotation systems on yields and nitrous oxide emissions in Canada using the DNDC model

Rong Jiang et al.

Summary: Process-based models are effective in assessing the sustainability of agricultural productivity and environmental health. This study found that the DNDC model performed well in simulating yields of corn, oats, and alfalfa, but only fair to good in predicting N2O emissions from rotational oats and alfalfa crops. Diverse rotation systems have varying impacts on N2O emissions and corn yields, with COAA having the lowest emissions and highest yields.

Moving beyond the incorrect but useful paradigm: reevaluating big-leaf and multilayer plant canopies to model biosphere-atmosphere fluxes - a review

Gordon B. Bonan et al.

Summary: This article revisits a 30-40-year-old debate about the representation of plant canopies in weather forecast and climate models. The study finds that using a multilayer representation of plant canopies more accurately simulates fluxes compared to a single-layer representation. The differences between single-layer and multilayer representations suggest that the land surface modeling community should revisit the big-leaf surface flux parameterizations used in models.

Improving the efficiency of urea-based fertilization leading to reduction in ammonia emission

Marta Klimczyk et al.

Summary: The addition of urease inhibitor NBPT to urea fertilizers can reduce ammonia emissions, while nitrification inhibitors may lead to an increase in ammonia emission. Factors such as dose and date of application, method of application, type of soil and pH, as well as atmospheric conditions, also have an impact on ammonia emissions.
