Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics in Space: Life Cycle Assessment towards Improved Sustainability of Space Vehicles

Vasiliki Stergiou et al.

Summary: Composite materials, specifically carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs), generate a significant amount of waste, making recycling crucial. This study assessed the residual lifecycle of CFRPs through a life cycle assessment (LCA) and evaluated the potential of recycling and its environmental benefits. The maturity increase in recycling technologies for CFRPs is important and necessary in reducing environmental impacts.

The Use of Carbon Fibers Recovered by Pyrolysis from End-of-Life Wind Turbine Blades in Epoxy-Based Composite Panels

Jakub Smolen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of recovering carbon fibers from end-of-life wind turbine blades through pyrolysis and using them in the production of flat composite panels. The results show that the mechanical properties of the recycled fibers do not significantly differ from the original fibers and the composite panels made with the pyrolytic fibers have higher flexural strength. This research indicates that the use of recycled carbon fibers is reliable and can be applied in various construction projects.
