Understanding the effect of nonmetallic impurities in regenerated cathode materials for lithium-ion battery recycling by tracking down impurity elements

Mincheol Beak et al.

Summary: The regeneration of cathode materials from actual industrial scale LIB leachate and purified leachate is the focus of current lithium-ion battery recycling research. Significant amounts of nonmetal and metal elements were detected in the regenerated NMC. The concept of yield of precipitation (YOP) was introduced to categorize the behavior of elements during co-precipitation in the precursors. This categorization of impurity elements will be beneficial for quality control in the LIB recycling industry.

Positive Role of Fluorine Impurity in Recovered LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 Cathode Materials

Yadong Zheng et al.

Summary: Research shows that a small amount of fluorine impurity can increase the ratio of nickel ions on the surface of the recovered material, while also forming holes in cathode particles, significantly improving rate capability and cyclability. Compared to the original material, NCM622 material with 0.2 at. % fluorine impurity has an increased capacity of about 8% and retains 98.0% capacity after 100 cycles at 0.33 C. Additionally, the cathode with 0.2 at. % fluorine impurity exhibits better rate performance, especially at high rates with about 7% improvement at 5 C, enhancing its overall performance.
