Optimizing hybrid offshore wind farms for cost-competitive hydrogen production in Germany

Michele Scolaro et al.

Summary: Nearly 96% of global hydrogen production comes from fossil fuels, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Utilizing unsold offshore wind electricity for hydrogen production offers a low-carbon pathway. This study investigates the cost competitiveness of offshore wind-based hydrogen production in ancillary service markets, as well as determining the optimal size of a hydrogen electrolyser. The findings suggest that offshore wind-based hydrogen production must participate in ancillary service markets to generate positive revenues and be cost competitive at current wind generation levels.

Techno-economic analysis of renewable fuels for ships carrying bulk cargo in Europe

Boris Stolz et al.

Summary: To meet global climate targets, renewable energy carriers should replace fossil marine fuels. This study provides an initial evaluation of the techno-economic suitability of carbon-neutral fuels, including hydrogen, ammonia, methane, methanol, and diesel produced from renewable electricity, for powering Europe's shipping fleet carrying bulk cargo. The results show that these carbon-neutral fuels can cover over 93% of the transport work, with a reduced cargo capacity of less than 3%. However, their use would result in an additional 4-8% of Europe's electricity consumption, and increase the total costs of ownership by a factor of 2-6 in 2030 compared to conventional operations.

Climate consequences of hydrogen emissions

Ilissa B. Ocko et al.

Summary: Given the urgency to decarbonize global energy systems, governments and industry are increasing efforts to deploy hydrogen technologies. However, the warming impact of hydrogen as an indirect greenhouse gas is often overlooked. This is because the short-lived atmospheric warming effects of hydrogen are not fully considered in standard methods for characterizing climate impacts. It is also concerning that hydrogen easily leaks into the atmosphere and the total amount of emissions from existing hydrogen systems is unknown. Understanding the climate consequences of hydrogen emissions is crucial for effective deployment of hydrogen in the emerging decarbonized global economy.
