Water sustainability: A waterless life cycle for cosmetic products

Joana B. Aguiar et al.

Summary: Freshwater is a scarce and precious resource due to various factors such as population growth, pollution, and economic development. The cosmetics industry heavily relies on water throughout the product life cycle, but companies are taking measures to reduce water consumption and promote sustainability. This includes using sustainable materials, developing waterless products, finding alternative water sources, optimizing manufacturing processes, and improving packaging and transport infrastructure. Consumer education is also important in promoting responsible use and disposal of products. Waterless products offer benefits to both the environment and consumers.

Review of closed water loops with ore sorting and tailings valorisation for a more sustainable mining industry

Paivi Kinnunen et al.

Summary: Conservation and management of freshwater resources is a major challenge of this century, especially in mining where controlling water intake and effluents quantity and quality is crucial. Closed water loops require new water quality control methods, and geopolymerisation of tailings has potential for use in covering deposited tailings. Detecting and classifying ore types in mining has a significant impact on metal recovery and process water quality.

Pathways of climate resilience over the 21st century

Carl-Friedrich Schleussner et al.

Summary: Climate change impacts are currently affecting human societies, while socio-economic development has increased countries' capacity to adapt. However, challenges remain, and the effectiveness of countries in fostering climate resilience will depend on the pace of both developments. Future climate resilience building will require an inclusive, sustainable mitigation pathway as less inclusive or fossil-fuel driven development may not lead to improvements in resilience.

Removal of Ca(II) and Mg(II) hardness by ion exchange resins and soda ash for seawater pretreatment to reduce scale formation in evaporators multi-stage flash desalination

Khedidja Dahmani et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that pretreatment achieved by a mixture of ion exchange and soda ash successfully removed 75% total hardness and reduced the concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ to 5 and 200 mg L-1, respectively.
