Effects of Reprocessing on Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene and Additives

Xiaojuan Bai et al.

Summary: ABS, as one of the most extensively used engineering polymers, was studied for recycling purposes using a torque rheometer. The processing at different temperatures and cycles showed an increase in large size soluble polymeric components, possibly due to crosslinking reactions in grafted polybutadiene. Reprocessing significantly affected the ABS resin, as indicated by chemical analysis after multiple extrusion cycles.

Emission behavior of crumb rubber modified asphalt in the production process

Naipeng Tang et al.

Summary: The emission behavior of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) during production can be described with a fast-slow two stage emission function, and terminal blend (TB) technology offers environmental advantage over traditional wet-process. Additionally, CRMA contains 9 new compounds mainly derived from accelerators and additives commonly used in the rubber industry.

Selection of recycled waste plastic for incorporation in sustainable asphalt pavements: A novel multi-criteria screening tool based on 31 sources of plastic

Rebecca Audy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the suitability of 31 recycled waste plastic samples as bitumen/asphalt modifiers. A new classification scheme was developed to rank each recycled waste plastic based on their properties. The results showed that low-density and linear low-density poly(ethylene), as well as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and poly(ethylene terephthalate), were preferred as modifiers.

Recycled plastic modified bitumen: Evaluation of VOCs and PAHs from laboratory generated fumes

Yeong Jia Boom et al.

Summary: This research investigates the fumes generated from producing polymer modified bitumen using different types of recycled plastics. The results show that incorporating recycled plastics can reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. However, specific compound concentrations may spike when recycled plastics are added, despite an overall reduction in concentration.

The sorption of persistent organic pollutants in microplastics from the coastal environment

Lin-Chi Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastic pellets collected from sandy beaches around Taiwan contained various organic pollutants, with high concentrations of PCDD/Fs, PBDD/Fs, PBDEs, and other POPs. These pollutants were mainly adsorbed into the inner part of microplastic pellets, resulting in a high ratio of total concentrations to surficial concentrations.

Occupational Exposure during Asphalt Paving - Comparison of Hot and Warm Mix Asphalt in Field Experiments

Raymond Olsen et al.

Summary: This study compared the occupational exposure levels during road paving with hot mix asphalt (HMA) and warm mix asphalt (WMA), finding that paving with WMA significantly reduced the air concentration of asphalt vapor, organic carbon, and respirable particulate matter compared to paving with HMA. The results suggest that using WMA instead of HMA may have health benefits for asphalt pavers due to lower airborne contaminant levels.

Sustainable Polymers from Recycled Waste Plastics and Their Virgin Counterparts as Bitumen Modifiers: A Comprehensive Review

Sabzoi Nizamuddin et al.

Summary: The failure of bituminous pavements is mainly caused by heavy traffic loads and weather-related conditions. To enhance the material properties of bitumen, polymer modification, particularly using plastomers, has been widely adopted. The use of recycled plastics in roads is also gaining traction as a cost-effective and environmentally beneficial solution for improving road durability.

A review on the characteristics of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants: A source for toxic chemicals

Amir Hossein Hamidian et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of microplastics discharged into the environment, with their characteristics in different environmental matrices still largely unknown. Most microplastics in water samples are composed of PET, PS, PP, and PE, with a significant proportion being removed during primary and secondary treatment stages, and MBR being the most efficient tertiary treatment technology. The majority of microplastics removed during wastewater treatment end up in sewage sludge and are released into the environment via sludge applications.
