Decabromodiphenyl Ethane Mainly Affected the Muscle Contraction and Reproductive Endocrine System in Female Adult Zebrafish

Yumiao Sun et al.

Summary: The novel brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) tends to accumulate in the brain of female zebrafish, leading to neurotoxicity and reproductive disruptions. Proteomic analysis showed effects on muscle contraction and estrogen response-related proteins. These findings provide important clues for further research on DBDPE mechanism and risk assessment.

Biodegradation of decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) by white-rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus: Characteristics, mechanisms, and toxicological response

Shutao Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that P. ostreatus has the potential to degrade DBDPE and effectively remove harmful substances from the environment, although coexisting substances like lead may inhibit its degradation efficiency. Enzymatic activity, particularly Lac, played a key role in the biodegradation process, while toxic responses included enhanced SOD and CAT activities.

Effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on the bioaccumulation, distribution and parental transfer of ethylhexyl salicylate

Ranran Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the accumulation and distribution of ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) and polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) in parental zebrafish and their offspring, as well as the impact of PS-NPs on the bioavailability of EHS. The findings showed that both EHS and PS-NPs could accumulate in parents and offspring, with PS-NPs significantly increasing the cumulative levels of EHS in various tissues. PS-NPs primarily targeted the yolk sac, affecting the bioavailability of EHS and its transfer from parents to offspring.

Effects of microplastics and food particles on organic pollutants bioaccumulation in equi-fugacity and above-fugacity scenarios

Mingyuan Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the impact of MPs on PCB bioaccumulation is dependent on the pollutant concentration, with MPs significantly increasing PCB accumulation at high concentrations. In contrast, FBPs were found to more effectively enhance PCB bioaccumulation in zebrafish under all scenarios.

New understanding of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs): Neuro (endocrine) toxicity

Liying Dong et al.

Summary: The neurotoxic effects of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are mainly manifested in direct neurotoxicity and disruption of the neuroendocrine system, affecting neurobehavior and reproductive development. The mechanism is related to the complex interaction of neural and endocrine signals.

Bioconcentration and developmental neurotoxicity of novel brominated flame retardants, hexabromobenzene and pentabromobenzene in zebrafish

Xiangping Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the flame retardants hexabromobenzene (HBB) and pentabromobenzene (PBB) were found to exhibit developmental neurotoxicity in zebrafish larvae, affecting parameters related to central nervous system development. However, they did not cause developmental toxicity. These findings provide important insights for future toxicological research and risk assessment of novel brominated flame retardants.

The influence of different polymer types of microplastics on adsorption, accumulation, and toxicity of triclosan in zebrafish

Cheng Sheng et al.

Summary: Different types of microplastics can affect the adsorption, accumulation, and toxicity of triclosan in zebrafish, with polypropylene having the highest adsorption capacity. Co-exposure to triclosan and polypropylene microplastics significantly increased oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the liver, as well as enhanced neurotoxicity in the brain. Microplastics contributed more to metabolic disorders in the liver compared to triclosan alone.

Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in soil and moss in Mt. Shergyla, southeast Tibetan Plateau: Occurrence, distribution and influencing factors

Hao Xian et al.

Summary: Research on the environmental fate and behavior of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in remote alpine regions is limited. This study investigated the concentrations and distributions of NBFRs in soils and mosses from the Tibetan Plateau, revealing that the concentrations of NBFRs correlated with altitude and were influenced by the mountain cold trapping effect (MCTE).

Effects of the brominated flame retardant, TBCO, on development of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos

Darren Van Essen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of TBCO on early life-stages of zebrafish, showing increased mortality, decreased heart rate, and abnormalities in spinal curvature and swim bladder inflation. The mechanisms behind these effects were found to not be related to oxidative stress or activation of cytochrome p4501a. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms of TBCO's adverse effects.

Characteristics of legacy and novel brominated flame retardants in water and sediment surrounding two e-waste dismantling regions in Taizhou, eastern China

Siyuan Ling et al.

Summary: The concentrations of PBDEs and NBFRs in water samples from two e-waste dismantling zones in Taizhou were comparable, while the levels were higher in sediment samples from the zone that was shut down in 2017. The study also found that certain brominated flame retardants did not decrease in concentration from the center to the outer regions of the sediment samples.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in aquatic environments - A critical review

Rui Hou et al.

Summary: Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are emerging as alternative flame retardants to legacy compounds, with concerns raised over their presence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risks in aquatic environments. NBFRs show source-dependent distribution, high bioaccumulative properties, resistance to degradation processes, and sorption to sludge and sediments in aquatic environments. Ecological risk assessments have suggested potential risks of NBFRs primarily in source areas. Further research is needed to address knowledge gaps in monitoring, toxicokinetics, transformation processes, and ecological risk assessments of NBFRs in aquatic environments.
