Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of olive and wine industry co-products valorisation

Joao S. Ramos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the valorisation of olive and wine industry co-products through different thermochemical processes. The characterization and life cycle assessment (LCA) of the biomass are conducted to evaluate the suitability and environmental impacts of various conversion processes. Techno-economic analysis is also performed to assess the feasibility of each scenario. The results suggest that gasification and pyrolysis are promising alternatives for the valorisation of olive pomace and grape marc, respectively.

Heavy Metal Ions Removal from Aqueous Solutions by Treated Ajwa Date Pits: Kinetic, Isotherm, and Thermodynamic Approach

Mohammad Azam et al.

Summary: In this study, cost-effective adsorbents based on ajwa date pits were prepared and used to remove Cu(II) ions from aqueous medium. The adsorbents showed high adsorption capacity for Cu(II) ions, and the majority of the metal could be recovered by acid elution from the saturated adsorbents. The results demonstrated that the adsorbents made from ajwa date pits could serve as an economical and environmentally friendly alternative for removing Cu(II) ion pollutant from water.

Practical limitations of bioaugmentation in treating heavy metal contaminated soil and role of plant growth promoting bacteria in phytoremediation as a promising alternative approach

Setyo Budi Kurniawan et al.

Summary: Bioaugmentation is a method of adding cultured microorganisms to enhance the existing microbial community in order to remediate contaminated areas. While this method has been successful in treating heavy metal contaminated soil, concerns regarding its applicability in real-scale applications have been raised. This review discusses the mechanisms of heavy metal treatment by microbes and the feasibility of bioaugmentation-assisted phytoremediation, which has shown greater efficiency in removing heavy metals from soil compared to bioaugmentation alone.

The effects of salt and protein level on the performance and fecal consistency of piglets between 4 and 9 weeks of age

S. Millet et al.

Summary: Recent research suggests that salt levels of at least 3.5 g/kg in the diet are optimal for piglets weighing between 7 and 11 kg. Despite higher salt levels in US pig diets compared to Europe, salt levels did not significantly affect performance or interact with crude protein levels. Higher salt levels were found to lead to worsened fecal consistency and potentially increased water consumption in weaned piglets.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated fully biodegradable PBAT/PBS composites reinforced with surface-treated coffee husks, exhibiting high mechanical strength and fire resistance. The surface-treated coffee husks improved the compatibility between matrices and the interfacial interaction between filler and matrices, leading to a significant increase in tensile strength and modulus compared to neat PBAT. Additionally, flammability and combustion tests confirmed the enhanced fire-resistant behavior of the composites due to the combined effect of phosphorus and dicarboxylic acid surface treatment.
