Design and assessment of an energy self-supply process producing tetraethyl orthosilicate using rice husk

Thuy T. H. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that rice husk ash (RHA) can be used to produce the important substance TEOS, but the process requires intensive energy supply. By designing a self-supply process, the energy demands for TEOS production can be met. Using rice husk for TEOS production can reduce CO2 emissions, and co-generating renewable electricity can bring economic benefits.

Synthesis of diethyl carbonate from CO2 and orthoester promoted by a CeO2 catalyst and ethanol

Wahyu S. Putro et al.

Summary: The combination of CeO2 catalyst and ethanol effectively promotes the direct synthesis of diethyl carbonate from CO2 and an orthoester. Optimized conditions yield high productivity, with orthoesters bearing longer alkyl substituents leading to higher DEC yields in the presence of ethanol. Aromatic and halide moieties in orthoesters negatively impact DEC formation.

Sustainable Synthesis of Dimethyl- and Diethyl Carbonate from CO2 in Batch and Continuous Flow-Lessons from Thermodynamics and the Importance of Catalyst Stability

Matthew F. O'Neill et al.

Summary: High yields of dimethyl- and diethylcarbonate can be achieved through continuous flow systems using supercritical CO2 under optimized conditions. Continuously removing both dialkylcarbonates and water from the reactor, rather than solely removing water, is crucial for maximizing product yield. Catalyst stability is the main limiting factor in catalyst development.

Catalytic CO2 esterification with ethanol for the production of diethyl carbonate using optimized CeO2 as catalyst

Marco Buchmann et al.

Summary: The direct conversion of (bio)ethanol and CO2 to diethyl carbonate (DEC) is a promising route due to the low cost and renewable nature of the reactants. By using urea as a precipitation agent, the optimal catalytic activity of pure ceria for DEC formation is achieved through a balance of surface acidity and basicity with a high specific surface area. Temperature-programmed desorption experiments indicate that weak basic sites play a key role in the DEC formation process.

Direct dimethyl carbonate synthesis from CO2 and methanol catalyzed by CeO2 and assisted by 2-cyanopyridine: a cradle-to-gate greenhouse gas emission study

Hajime Ohno et al.

Summary: The study investigates the direct synthesis of DMC from CO2 and methanol using CeO2 and 2-cyanopyridine as catalyst and dehydration agent, and evaluates the greenhouse gas emissions with process simulation. Results show that the cradle-to-gate greenhouse gas emissions of the new process are significantly lower than conventional commercial processes, with even lower emissions after heat exchange. Methanol consumption is identified as the main source of emissions, while converted CO2 plays an important offsetting role.
