Assessment of the water-energy-carbon nexus in energy systems: A multi-objective approach

Emanuel Birkir Gomez-Gardars et al.

Summary: This paper explores the importance of incorporating thermal storage into combined heat and power systems using a multi-objective optimization approach, finding significant impacts on reducing water consumption, emissions, and improving system efficiency. The multi-objective analysis provides a systematic metric for assessment of nexus and a strategy for identifying system performance limits.

Validation of weather reanalysis datasets and geospatial and techno-economic viability and potential assessment of concentrated solar power plants

Momina Ahmad et al.

Summary: This study examines the feasibility of renewable energy systems in Pakistan by analyzing various parameters including meteorological, land-use, techno-economic, and environmental aspects. The researchers find high correlation and low bias in the radiation datasets considered, as well as strong correlation between the temperature and air pressure datasets and ground measurements. Resource maps are created based on long-term timeseries data, and spatial feasibility and site suitability are assessed using specific meteorological, socio-economic, and environmental parameters. The study also evaluates the techno-economic potential of the renewable energy systems using bias-corrected datasets. The research identifies a cumulative power capacity potential of 10,035 GW for Pakistan, with a net cost estimated below 0.096 USD/kWh. Nine sites are found to have the potential to fulfill the country's total predicted energy demand for 2030, but the installation of concentrated solar power plants is limited by factors such as land cover and lack of access to transmission networks.

Multi-objective optimization of concentrated solar power plants from an energy-water-environment nexus perspective under distinct climatic conditions - Part A: Techno-economic analysis

Momina Ahmad et al.

Summary: In this study, techno-economic evaluation and optimization of concentrated solar power plants considering design parameters and thermal energy storage are conducted. The results show that the combination of appropriate solar multiple and storage can significantly increase electricity generation and reduce costs. Wet-cooled solar towers perform the best in all climate zones. Additionally, the levelized cost of electricity is a better metric for economic viability than net present value.

Defining the cost of water impact for thermoelectric power generation

Fontina Petrakopoulou

Summary: Thermal power plants use a large amount of water for cooling, which can have both quantity and quality impacts on water sources. Recirculating cooling systems result in significantly lower water costs compared to once-through systems. Coal plants have about three times higher water impact costs than natural gas plants, emphasizing the importance of operational efficiency on water use in power plants.

Mapping concentrated solar power site suitability in Algeria

Brahim Haddad et al.

Summary: The investment in solar thermal power technologies in Algeria is becoming more attractive, and a methodology to identify optimal sites for the installation of solar power plants has been presented. The study focused on concentrated solar power (CSP) and used a hybrid approach combining multi criteria decision making and Geographic Information System to identify feasible locations. The results indicated that more than 51% of the country's territory is unsuitable for CSP implementation, based on various criteria such as topography, water availability, and proximity to the grid. This study highlights the importance of considering multiple factors beyond just Direct Normal Irradiation values for energy planning and decision-making processes.
