A comparative study of national variations of the European WEEE directive: manufacturer's view

Terje Andersen

Summary: The European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive regulates the handling of e-waste based on the extended producer responsibility (EPR) model, but the implementation in each country varies greatly, posing challenges for e-manufacturers and e-waste handling operators. This study found inconsistencies in reported WEEE data, differences in environmental fee calculations, and the practice of over-reporting to meet national WEEE obligations, impacting environmental corporate social responsibility, brand reputation, and profitability. Additionally, outsourcing end-of-life treatment to producer responsibility organizations (PROs) was seen as positive by manufacturers, but resulted in a decoupling of EPR and operational end-of-life treatment, potentially hindering efforts to improve circularity levels of EEE products.

Sustainability of emerging energy and transportation technologies is impacted by the coexistence of minerals in nature

Ayman Elshkaki

Summary: Wind power and electric vehicles can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve air quality, but their reliance on rare earth metals for production leads to high energy and water use as well as significant carbon emissions. Enhancing resource efficiency, recycling, and targeting metal-rich deposits are crucial for minimizing the environmental impacts of these technologies.
