Coal mining method with near-zero impact on the ecological environment in a high-intensity mining area of Northwest China

Erhu Bai et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new coal mining method with near-zero impact on underground aquifers (MNIA) to effectively control overburden and coordinate with the eco-environment. The ecological fragile status of the mining area is studied, and the parameters for strip mining and filling rate are determined. Additionally, the development and utilization of underground space is proposed, providing a new solution for aquifer protection and coal resource exploitation in eco-environmental fragile areas.

Identifying ecosystem service bundles and the spatiotemporal characteristics of trade-offs and synergies in coal mining areas with a high groundwater table

Sucui Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatiotemporal characteristics of interactions among ecosystem services (ESs) is important for maintaining human well-being and achieving sustainable regional development. This study examines the coal mining areas with a high groundwater table (CMA-HGT) in Huainan to identify ecosystem service bundles (ESBs) and explore the spatiotemporal characteristics of trade-offs/synergies among ESs at different grid scales and ESBs. The results demonstrate that trade-offs are generally observed among provisioning services, while synergies are generally found between regulation and maintenance services. The findings highlight the regional heterogeneity and scale dependence of the interactions among ESs, providing valuable guidelines for ecosystem management and restoration programs.

Innovation for sustainable mining: Integrated planning of underground coal mining and mine reclamation

Gensheng Li et al.

Summary: The integrated planning of mining and reclamation is important for reducing land degradation and addressing conflicts. This study adopted concurrent mining and reclamation technologies to divide the planning into four key steps and discussed the impacts of mining on reclamation. The requirements of reclamation for mining were also discussed. The results showed that integrated planning can reduce damage, reclaim land in a timely manner, and alleviate conflicts.

Changes in total organic carbon and organic carbon fractions of reclaimed minesoils in response to the filling of different substrates

Xiangyu Min et al.

Summary: The filling of different substrates in reclaimed minesoils (RMS) has a significant impact on the composition of soil organic carbon (SOC). Soil physics and fertility in the backfilling layer have more direct and indirect effects on SOC content, while substrate texture and soil physics have a stronger influence on SOC content in the filling layer.

Summary: By analyzing the regional geochemical data of the Nappe Zone, it was found that the Pb-Zn deposits in this area belong to two genetic types: Pb-Zn-Ba-Sr Mississippi-valley-type (MVT) and Pb-As-Sb SEDEX type. The distribution of geochemical anomalies is spatially associated with regional structures, indicating that this region has good ore potential.

Continues monitoring of subsidence water in mining area from the eastern plain in China from 1986 to 2018 using Landsat imagery and Google Earth Engine

Tingting He et al.

Summary: The eastern plain of China is a significant grain and coal production area, where coal mining can lead to land subsidence and waterlogging, destroying cultivated land. A new method using Landsat imagery and the Google Earth Engine platform was developed to generate dynamic maps of subsidence ponding and restoration years, accurately distinguishing between subsidence water and artificially excavated water. The method, with high identification accuracies, can provide valuable data for decision-making and land reclamation planning.

Impact of farmland reclamation on soil distribution in Japan: the case of Andosols in Nagano Prefecture

Kimihiro Kida et al.

Summary: Farmlands in Japan have been reconstructed at a large scale through cutting and filling of soils, resulting in a decrease in topsoil thickness to an average of 26.9 cm. The reclamation process affected soil properties and led to a decrease in topsoil thickness, potentially altering the original soil distributions.

A boundary model of terrain reconstruction in a coal-mining subsidence waterlogged area

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: Mining of coal in areas with high groundwater levels leads to surface water accumulation, making land reclamation challenging. A mathematical model using the Probability Integral Method was established to help reconstruct terrain, and resulted in successful land reclamation and efficient land utilization through dividing the subsidence area into different regions. This method provides a new technology for eco-environment treatment in high groundwater level areas experiencing subsidence.

Jamel Ayari et al.

Summary: A combination of environmental geochemical indices and geographic information system approach was successfully used to assess contamination status and source apportionment of trace elements in surface stream sediments from the Oued Rarai basin in north-western Tunisia. The study revealed a non-negligible potential ecological risk, mainly related to sediment transport along the river, with antimony, arsenic, lead, mercury, and silver as the most crucial contaminants. The study also identified three main geochemical associations related to lithologic, tectonic and anthropogenic sources.
