Impact of anabolic androgenic steroids on male sexual and reproductive function: a systematic review

Massimiliano Esposito et al.

Summary: AAS abuse has negative effects on the male reproductive organs, causing testicular atrophy and azoospermia. Although sperm quality can recover within a few months after stopping AAS abuse, the impact on spermatogenesis may take up to three years to disappear. There is a positive correlation between AAS abuse and an increase in morphologically abnormal spermatozoa in athletes.

Automated online dried blood spot sample preparation and detection of anabolic steroid esters for sports drug testing

Jing Jing et al.

Summary: Dried blood spots (DBS) are a valuable sample matrix for routine doping analysis, and a fully automated online DBS preparation and detection method has been developed and validated for screening and quantification of anabolic steroid esters. The method showed linear, precise, and accurate results, with applicable LODs for testosterone laurate and other steroid esters. Analyte stability evaluation demonstrated the applicability of automated DBS analysis in doping control for detection of anabolic steroid esters.

Dried blood spots for anti-doping: Why just going volumetric may not be sufficient

Marc Luginbuhl et al.

Summary: This perspective discusses quantitative DBS analysis for anti-doping testing in an athletic population and argues that using only volumetric sampling may not be sufficient. It provides examples of HCT variations, discusses the whole blood to plasma ratio and HCT extraction bias, and presents options to correct for the HCT bias.

Improving the detection of anabolic steroid esters in human serum by LC-MS

Xavier de la Torre et al.

Summary: This article introduces an analytical method for detecting testosterone and nandrolone esters in human serum, involving sample pre-treatment, derivatization, and validation. The Girard P hydrazones derivative was found to be the most effective. The method is specific for all compounds considered, linear within the investigated concentration range, with LODs ranging from 0.03 to 0.30 ng/mL, high extraction recovery, and minimal matrix effect.
