Mercury can be transported into marine copepod by polystyrene nanoplastics but is not bioaccumulated: An increased risk?

Dongmei Xie et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution has negative effects on the global marine environment, and the combined effects of nanoplastics and mercury have not been well characterized. This study found that nanoplastics can transport mercury into marine organisms, but do not promote mercury bioaccumulation. Co-exposure to nanoplastics and mercury resulted in a synergistic interaction in copepods.

Mercury pollution in Peru: geographic distribution, health hazards, and sustainable removal technologies

Fernando G. Torres et al.

Summary: Peru is a major gold producer, with a significant portion coming from artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM). However, ASGM has led to mercury contamination due to the rudimentary techniques used. This review systematically analyzes the concentration and distribution of mercury pollution in various environmental compartments and samples in Peru, and explores the use of adsorption techniques as alternatives to treat mercury vapor emissions from gold shops and smelter flues.

Mercury speciation in Scottish raptors reveals high proportions of inorganic mercury in Scottish golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos): Potential occurrence of mercury selenide nanoparticles

Shaun T. Lancaster et al.

Summary: Understanding the uptake and fate of mercury compounds in biota is crucial for understanding the global mercury cycling and its transfer through food chains. This study analyzed mercury concentrations in Scottish birds of prey and found the presence of mercury selenide nanoparticles in the liver of some golden eagles, which has not been observed in terrestrial birds of prey before. The study suggests that these nanoparticles may be formed as a detoxification mechanism or accumulated through foraging on stranded cetaceans or seabirds.
