Selected configuration interaction wave functions in phaseless auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo

Ankit Mahajan et al.

Summary: In this study, efficient algorithms for utilizing selected configuration interaction trial wave functions in phaseless auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) are presented. These algorithms optimize computational performance for longer configuration interaction expansions, allowing for the use of up to a million configurations in the trial state for ph-AFQMC. The favorable scaling of the computational cost with an increasing number of configurations provides a means to assess the accuracy of ph-AFQMC and study the systematic convergence of the phaseless bias.

A Localized-Orbital Energy Evaluation for Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo

John L. Weber et al.

Summary: Phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) is a promising method for simulating medium- to large-sized molecules with high accuracy and favorable scaling. However, the memory requirements of standard energy evaluation algorithms can be a limiting factor, especially on GPUs with limited memory. In this paper, a new method based on the low rank of Coulombic interactions between localized orbitals is proposed to reduce memory and computational scaling for ph-AFQMC. The method, called localized-orbital AFQMC (LO-AFQMC), shows systematic and controllable errors and is computationally efficient even for small systems. Results for various test cases demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of LO-AFQMC compared to experiment and full ph-AFQMC.

Unbiasing fermionic quantum Monte Carlo with a quantum computer

William J. Huggins et al.

Summary: Interacting many-electron problems are challenging in computational science, but accurate predictions of chemical reactivity and other properties can offer significant benefits. In this study, the authors propose a hybrid approach combining constrained quantum Monte Carlo with quantum computation to reduce biases. Experimental implementation using up to 16 qubits achieves accuracy comparable to classical methods without excessive error mitigation, offering a promising alternative for practical quantum advantage in electronic structure problems.

Twenty Years of Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo in Quantum Chemistry: An Overview and Assessment on Main Group Chemistry and Bond-Breaking

Joonho Lee et al.

Summary: This work presents an overview of the phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (ph-AFQMC) approach and evaluates its performance in chemistry problems. For systems with accurate single determinant wave functions, ph-AFQMC is a good choice with accuracy between CCSD and CCSD(T); for systems requiring multireference wave functions, ph-AFQMC is more accurate than MR perturbation theory methods and competitive with MR configuration interaction (MRCI) methods.

A phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo perspective on the uniform electron gas at finite temperatures: Issues, observations, and benchmark study

Joonho Lee et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the ph-FT-AFQMC method is sufficiently accurate for ab initio systems at high to intermediate electronic densities. It shows that the phaseless constraint at finite temperature is fundamentally different from its zero-temperature counterpart, and one should not necessarily expect agreement between ph-FT-AFQMC and ph-ZT-AFQMC at low temperatures. Additionally, the exchange-correlation energies obtained from ph-FT-AFQMC demonstrate better agreement with a known parameterization compared to restricted path-integral MC in certain conditions.

Spectral Functions from Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo without Analytic Continuation: The Extended Koopmans' Theorem Approach

Joonho Lee et al.

Summary: The study investigates the use of the extended Koopmans' theorem in the AFQMC method, finding that it can reproduce the qualitative features of spectral functions for charge excitations within a certain error range. The research also demonstrates how a higher-order EKT approach can correct errors in earlier theories.

The Fermionic Quantum Emulator

Nicholas C. Rubin et al.

Summary: The Fermionic Quantum Emulator (FQE) is a collection of protocols for efficiently emulating quantum dynamics of fermions by taking advantage of common symmetries. By reducing memory footprint and utilizing custom evolution routines for sparse and dense Hamiltonians, FQE allows for the study of significantly larger quantum circuits at modest computational cost. This release paper outlines the technical details of simulation methods and key advantages.

Taming the Sign Problem in Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo Using Accurate Wave Functions

Ankit Mahajan et al.

Summary: In this study, different methods of incorporating accurate trial wave functions into free projection auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (fp-AFQMC) were explored. It was demonstrated that these wave functions can mitigate the sign problem and accelerate convergence in quantum chemical problems, allowing application to systems of substantial sizes. Calculations on the widely studied model Cu2O22+ system showed substantial differences in isomerization energies compared to previously reported values.
