Full-frequency dynamical Bethe-Salpeter equation without frequency and a study of double excitations

Sylvia J. Bintrim et al.

Summary: The Bethe-Salpeter equation resulting from the GW approximation can be reformulated as a frequency-independent eigenvalue problem, avoiding the common static screening approximation and providing access to excited states with dominant double excitation character.

Unphysical discontinuities, intruder states and regularization in GW methods

Enzo Monino et al.

Summary: By recasting the non-linear frequency-dependent GW quasiparticle equation into a linear eigenvalue problem, this study explains the occurrence of multiple solutions and unphysical discontinuities in various physical quantities computed within the GW approximation. The GW self-energy is treated as an effective Hamiltonian, which reveals the key signatures of strong correlation in the (N +/- 1)-electron states and their direct relation to the intruder state problem. A regularization procedure inspired by the similarity renormalization group is proposed to avoid these issues and accelerate the convergence of partially self-consistent GW calculations.

Modeling of excited state potential energy surfaces with the Bethe-Salpeter equation formalism: The 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile twist

Iryna Knysh et al.

Summary: This study presents a benchmark investigation of excited state potential energy surfaces using various theoretical models, focusing on 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile as a paradigmatic system. The results demonstrate that the BSE/GW approach can accurately reproduce the topology of the potential energy surfaces and predict vertical transition energies in good agreement with coupled cluster methods. Additionally, the BSE method is able to accurately describe solvent-induced changes in the excited states.

Potential Energy Surfaces without Unphysical Discontinuities: The Coulomb Hole Plus Screened Exchange Approach

J. Arjan Berger et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the advantages of using the COHSEX approach in calculating potential energy surfaces, showing smoother results compared to other methods. The use of self-consistent COHSEX QP energies and orbitals can lead to results independent of the starting point and improved equilibrium distances. The total energies may worsen with self-consistency, but the equilibrium distances are improved due to changes in screening within the Bethe-Salpeter equation.

The GW Miracle in Many-Body Perturbation Theory for the Ionization Potential of Molecules

Fabien Bruneval et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluates the quality of several perturbation theories against high-level quantum chemistry methods, finding GW to be the most accurate approximation for ionization potentials. Attempts to improve upon GW by adding more diagrams were mostly unsuccessful, with only the inclusion of a GW density-matrix showing positive impact. Additionally, using an improved hybrid functional for the non-interacting Green's function further enhanced the accuracy of the simplest GW approximation.

Scrutinizing GW-Based Methods Using the Hubbard Dimer

S. Di Sabatino et al.

Summary: In this study, with the simple Hubbard dimer, it was found that the issue of multiple quasiparticle solutions in the one-shot GW method can be resolved by full self-consistency. The Bethe-Salpeter equation formalism was used to analyze the neutral excitation spectrum within the standard GW approximation, revealing the impact of factors such as increasing electron-electron interaction on the excitation energies. The trace formula was shown to exhibit correct behavior for weak interactions, while the ACFDT expression was more stable but less accurate, highlighting the different characteristics of each approach in predicting correlation energies.

Summary: This study applies the spin-flip ansatz to the Bethe-Salpeter equation to access double excitations in conjugated molecules. The scheme is based on a spin-unrestricted version of the GW approximation and an unrestricted generalization of a perturbative treatment. The performance of the spin-flip BSE formalism is illustrated by computing excited-state energies of various molecules.

Low-Order Scaling Quasiparticle Self-Consistent GW for Molecules

Arno Forster et al.

Summary: An all-electron implementation of quasiparticle self-consistent GW for molecular systems is presented, achieving fast and stable convergence with good agreement compared to other codes. The computational efficiency of the new implementation is demonstrated by calculating the quasiparticle spectrum of a DNA oligomer with 1,220 electrons using a basis of 6,300 atomic orbitals. The study shows the dependence of quasiparticle energies of DNA oligomers on the oligomer size and the stabilizing effects of the DNA environment and aqueous environment on ionization potentials and electron affinities.
