Second Sphere Effects on Oxygen Reduction and Peroxide Activation by Mononuclear Iron Porphyrins and Related Systems

Sarmistha Bhunia et al.

Summary: Activation and reduction of O-2 and H2O2 by synthetic and biosynthetic iron porphyrin models have been proven to be a versatile platform for evaluating second-sphere effects important in natural heme active sites. By installing different functional groups around the porphyrin ligand, several second-sphere effects have been evaluated under controlled environments, providing fundamental insights into the roles played by these weak interactions in nature.

Existing fossil fuel extraction would warm the world beyond 1.5 °C

Kelly Trout et al.

Summary: This study provides a bottom-up assessment of committed CO2 emissions from existing and under-construction oil and gas fields, as well as coal mines. The findings reveal that developed reserves of fossil fuels exceed the carbon budget for staying within 1.5 degrees Celsius. To achieve this target, governments and companies may need to not only halt the development of new fields and mines but also decommission a significant portion of already developed ones.

Electrostatic Secondary-Sphere Interactions That Facilitate Rapid and Selective Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction in a Fe-Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Ran Shimoni et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant enhancement of CO2 reduction activity and selectivity by electrostatic secondary-sphere functionalities in MOF materials. In situ Raman analysis reveals that immobilizing pendent positively-charged groups adjacent to MOF-residing Fe-porphyrin catalysts stabilizes weakly-bound CO intermediates and allows for control of the catalytic reaction by varying the ionic strength of the electrolyte.

Second and Outer Coordination Sphere Effects in Nitrogenase, Hydrogenase, Formate Dehydrogenase, and CO Dehydrogenase

Sven T. Stripp et al.

Summary: Gases like H-2, N-2, CO2, and CO are important feedstock for green energy conversion and as sources of nitrogen and carbon. However, their industrial transformation and production require significant energy input, whereas nature efficiently converts them at ambient conditions using gas-processing metalloenzymes (GPMs). In this review, the importance of the cofactor/protein interface in GPMs is emphasized, and the effects of second and outer coordination sphere on catalytic activity are discussed.

Second-Sphere Hydrogen-Bond Donors and Acceptors Affect the Rate and Selectivity of Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction by Iron Porphyrins Differently

Arnab Ghatak et al.

Summary: Controlling the factors that affect the rate and selectivity of 4e-/4H+ O2 reduction is crucial for efficient energy transformation and understanding the final step of respiration in aerobic organisms. This study explores the use of artificial systems with different second-sphere residues to enhance the rate and efficiency of O2 reduction. By investigating the behavior of an iron porphyrin complex with pendant 1,10-phenanthroline residues, the researchers discovered that the pH-dependent variations in the reaction rate are due to different intermediates formed at different pH levels. These findings, along with density functional theory calculations, provide insights into designing an efficient electrochemical O2 reduction reaction based on bioinspirations.

An Iron Porphyrin Complex with Pendant Pyridine Substituents Facilitates Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction via Second Coordination Sphere Effects

Anthony R. Ramuglia et al.

Summary: The newly synthesized iron porphyrin complex Py2XPFe contains a bispyridylamine-based hanging unit, which serves as a hydrogen bonding site to facilitate proton transfer and increase the rate of catalysis in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions. The hanging group beneficially impacts the rate of catalysis when compared to the non-functionalized analog TMPFe, and the addition of weak Bronsted acids further enhances the catalytic activity of Py2XPFe.

Proton Relay in Iron Porphyrins for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Sarmistha Bhunia et al.

Summary: The presence of proton-transfer groups near the catalyst can enhance the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Investigations show that a simple iron porphyrin can catalyze the HER at FeI state without being reduced to its formal Fe-0 state, and the rate of HER becomes almost independent of the pK(a) of the external acid used in the presence of protonated distal residues.

Activating the Fe(I) State of Iron Porphyrinoid with Second-Sphere Proton Transfer Residues for Selective Reduction of CO2 to HCOOH via Fe(III/II)-COOH Intermediate(s)

Sk Amanullah et al.

Summary: The ability to tune the selectivity of CO2 reduction by first-row transition metal-based complexes through second-sphere effects has promising implications. By understanding the mechanism of CO2 reduction by iron porphyrins and designing a porphyrinoid ligand, it was possible to catalyze the reduction of CO2 to HCOOH with high yield and low overpotential. The key role of a closely placed proton transfer residue in aiding CO2 binding to Fe(I) and stabilizing intermediates was elucidated through the reaction mechanism.

Unextractable fossil fuels in a 1.5 °C world

Dan Welsby et al.

Summary: Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement have pledged to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, but a sharp decline in fossil fuel use is required to keep the temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius. A global energy systems model shows that by 2050, 60% of oil and fossil methane gas, and 90% of coal must remain unextracted to stay within a 1.5 degrees Celsius carbon budget.
